Holidays in Muzla

When chucking a sickie becomes way too easy, it's time to take a breather from the nine-to-five and say hello to Muzla!

It lies 150 kilometres from the well-known city of Eisenstadt and 170 kilometres from a second great city, Vienna.

Look out for shiny seashells to add to your collection at home or try to spot critters like crabs and sea stars at Gardony Beach and Balatonalmadi Beach. You'll find these glorious strips of coastline 65 kilometres and 95 kilometres away, respectively.

You won't have to be stuck on the highway all day to see some nature. Just 50 kilometres out of Muzla, the Budapest Castle Hill Funicular is a favourite spot to kick back and relax. More picturesque surrounds await at Palvolgyi Cave, 45 kilometres away.

Curious about the area's religious side? Spend some time at the Muzla Temple.

Leave a trail of white powder in your wake as you tear down the trails at Epleny Ski Arena. Powder hounds should also visit Nordica Síaréna.

How do you like the sound of Esztergom Basilica and Maria Valeria Bridge? These fantastic sights are in Tát, located just 7 kilometres southeast of Muzla. Or maybe Castle of Esztergon and the Christian Museum appeal more to you? To visit them, go to Sturovo, 10 kilometres to the east.

Feel like checking out Calvary Chapel, Castle Tata and the Museum of Greek and Roman Sculptures? Get moving to Baj, 20 kilometres to the southwest, and set up base. These attractions, as well as Geologic Nature Park and the Old Lake Golf Club, are all nearby.

Whether you prefer the stylishness of Michelin stars or munching on a snack from a street cart, tasting the local food and drink is one of the greatest things about travel. So why not tingle your taste buds by digging into some of the area's decadent offerings?

Want to know about a few of the surprises that'll land on your dinner plate? There's every chance they'll include potatoes, cabbage or perhaps even both.

While in Muzla, dine like a local. That means sitting down to a meal of bryndzové halušky (gnocchi with sheep cheese) or kapustnica (cabbage soup), some of the area's signature recipes.

We're sure you won't need too much persuading to eat štedrák (layer cake), a treat that'll make you want to pack everything up and start a new life here.

They say life's not all beer and skittles, but there's definitely nothing wrong with kicking back with a cold one once in a while. While you're here, ensure it's Smädný mních.

To really get the party started, enjoy a couple of shots of bošácka slivovica (plum brandy). Drink it down straight or ask the bar person for something to mix it with.

There's a wine barrel full of reasons why you should order Welschriesling or Blaufränkisch. These fine drops draw wine authorities from across the country.

You may be poor in European euros when it comes to the end of your trip, but you'll be rich in amazing experiences. "Dovidenia" Muzla!

Time to hit the tarmac? Pack your bag, set the alarm clock and make a plan to get to Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). It's roughly 65 kilometres to the southeast.
