Holidays in Nagano

Life is all about good friends and great adventures. So dig out that well-worn suitcase — it’s time to take those wandering feet of yours to Nagano!

This region of Nagano is called home by about 360,000 locals.

The nation's capital, Tokyo, sits 180 kilometres southeast of Nagano, while Kamiminochi can be found 13 kilometres to the west.

The entire family will enjoy visits to Jigokudani Monkey Park and Chibikko Ninja Village. If that isn't enough to wear the young ones out, why not make the trip to Togakushi Farm and Kids Ninja Village as well?

Adults and youngsters alike will enjoy getting close to the assortment of exciting animals at the Chausuyama Zoo and Suzaka City Zoo. Shiroyama Zoo is another top attraction which teaches visitors about conservation and animal care.

Get out of the city for the day and savour some wine tasting at the St. Cousair Winery. Be sure to grab a bottle of the most delicious drop to add to your collection back home!

For a pleasant day out, make a trip to the Togakushi Forest Botanical Garden or the Floral Garden Obuse. The twisting walkways and beautifully presented gardens are sure to please. Many tourists also choose to take a leisurely walk around the Nanohana Park.

Cast off your shoes and enjoy the grass beneath your feet at a green space like Himekawa Headwaters Nature Exploration Park or Hakuba Green Sports Park. Also consider spending a peaceful day roaming the grounds of Chausuyama Dinosaur Park and Hachiman-para Historic Park.

Are there any walking tours? What's there to do this weekend? You’ll find the answers to almost any question you might have about your time here at Happo Information Center.

You'll be absolutely delighted by the swirling spectacle of Naenataki and Naenataki Falls. The endlessly flowing water at Kaminari-daki Waterfall and Yonako Great Falls is also a remarkable sight.

If you enjoy the calming effects of being near the water, you're in the right place. Lake Hokuryuko and Kagami-ike Pond are just a handful of the tranquil natural waterbodies here that you shouldn't miss. A tour of Daizahoshi Pond or Lake Kagami-ike is also a day well spent, if not for the native birdlife, then for some more dazzling vistas.

You probably know about its must-see shopping centres and museums, but don't forget that Nagano has some pleasant natural sights too. Joshinetsu Kogen National Park and Chubu-Sangaku National Park are two to keep in the front of your mind. For those who haven't quite had their fill, Mount Yokote and Tsugaike Natural Park are a couple more worth checking out.

Compelling exhibits are waiting to be seen at the Hakuba Mini Train Park and Togakushi Museum of Natural History. They're serene sites to relax or escape a rainy day. Museum buffs also need to check out the Togakushi Soba Museum and the Togakure Ninpo Museum.

Ignite your curiosity with a trip to Yamazaki Farm, where you'll be exposed to the latest and greatest from the science realm.

We're not exactly sure how the Taikan Bonsai Museum and the Lake Nojiri Naumann Elephant Museum have managed to accumulate so many of this planet's fascinating treasures into just two spaces. A visit to either will provide you with endless hours of awe and admiration. When it comes to the natural world you'll never see everything, but don't let that stop you from trying! For even more peculiar specimens, add the Nagano City Museum to your agenda.

Whichever style of art tickles your fancy, you're sure to find it in Nagano. Why not kick off your day of art admiring at the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum and the Hokusai Museum? Also investigate what exhibitions are being held at the Kitano Museum of Art and the Hakuba Art Museum.

Learn about Nagano's past and understand the present at the Sanada Treasure Museum. The Kozan Takai Memorial Museum and the Suzaka Municipal Museum are two more institutions that are on a mission to preserve and share the unique and rich heritage of this region.

To truly get a feel for the background of Nagano, set aside time to explore the Nio-mon Gate and the Sanmon Gate. Why not also check out Matsushiro Underground Imperial Headquarters and Shojuan?

Contained between the impenetrable walls of Matsushiro Castle is an amazing history. The glory days of times gone by can be felt around every corner.

Anyone interested in the religious heritage of the area should make a day of the Zenko-ji Temple and Togakushi Shrine. Zozan Shrine and the Chokoku-ji Temple also attract many spiritually curious visitors.

You'll probably feel like there's nothing left to discover after seeing Nagano's most renowned tourist attractions, but don't check in for that flight home just yet. There are still plenty of things to check out. Why not make your way to the Zozan Memorial Museum and the Happo-one Adam Gondola? You'll also find plenty to keep you occupied at the Machi Tosho Terrasow and Joyama Park.
