Holidays in Nita-gun

Yep. We understand. Wanderlust — it gets right into your bones. So, isn't it high time you organised your next adventure? Nita-gun awaits!

You'll find one of Japan's greatest cities just a couple of hours from Nita-gun. Okayama is 100 kilometres to the southeast.

Find some time for playing games on the shore and collecting delicate shells at Kokufu Beach or Kirara Road Station.

You don't need to be stuck on the road all day to experience some nature. Just 50 kilometres out of Nita-gun, Amenomanai is a superb place to fill your lungs with fresh air. More delightful surrounds await at Taishakugawa Dam, 40 kilometres away.

Jump on the chairlift at Asahitengusuton Ski Area, enjoy the stunning panoramic views and then carve your way back to the base. For more ice-cold action, conquer the trails at Shingo Daiichi Ski Resort.

Don't forget to go to the Itohara Memorial for a pleasant afternoon.

If you want to do a little exploring, add a day trip to Okuizumo to your plan. This place is 0.6 kilometres to the southeast and features the Okuizimo Tane Museum Of Natural History and Mt. Eboshi. Need more ideas? Yasugi is 25 kilometres to the northeast of Nita-gun and is proud to offer the Jokoji Temple and Gassantoda Castle.

Travellers and locals alike often make the journey to Izumo. This destination is 35 kilometres to the northwest and not too far from the Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo, Izumo Cultural Tradition Hall and the Shimane Flower Village. If you're staying on a while, remember to stop by Taisha Goen Hiroba Road Station and the Imaoka Art Museum.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, you probably think travel is too. Combine your love for both by heading out and sampling the food and drink offerings at the restaurants, cafés and bars across town.

If you're browsing a menu, there's every chance you'll see dishes with beef or noodles. They're just two ingredients which are often used in the cooking here.

There's always a local recipe or two you must try, and during your time in Nita-gun, tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) is one of them. Hako-zushi (square sushi) is some more traditional fare that's an essential experience for foodies.

Dinner isn't complete without dessert, so don't worry about calorie counting and lay into one of the most well-liked sweet treats, anpan (sweet roll).

Is there anything more satisfying than knocking back an ice-cold glass of beer topped off with a perfect foam head? Quench your thirst and mingle with the locals over a couple of rounds of Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

For something with a little more kick, enjoy one or two shots of junmaishu. Sip it neat or ask your barkeep for mixed-drink recommendations.

Knock down the language barrier by memorising a couple of greetings and expressions in the local tongue. You'll gain a more satisfying experience and a few new buddies while you're at it! Try to say 'Hisashiburi'. It translates to 'long time no see'. 'Ikura desu ka?' ('how much is this?') is one more you might need.

Don't forget to put the 23rd of December in your calendar. In Nita-gun this means one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A notable day of celebrations, this is a great time of year to check out the country.

Like all good things, your trip to Nita-gun will eventually come to an end. When it's finally time to head off, say a last "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" and spend your leftover holiday allowance on some keepsakes to take home.

If you're flying back home, it's probably a wise idea to map out your route to the terminal in advance. From the middle of Nita-gun, it's around 220 kilometres east to Kansai International Airport (KIX), the closest airport.
