Holidays in Nkhata Bay

Nkhata Bay is a place that has heaps of cool stories to tell. If you reckon your life's been a bit humdrum lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It lies 270 kilometres to the north of the nation's capital, Lilongwe.

You should always know where your closest natural escape lies. Here, it's Mzuzu Wildlife Conservation Park, 30 kilometres out of Nkhata Bay.

If you're the sort of traveller who loves experiencing the true local vibe of the place you're visiting, Mzuzu Stadium should be number one on your to-do list. See what live games are on while you're here and cheer along with excited local sports fans. You'll find the arena 35 kilometres away in Mzuzu.

What about swinging by the Ilala Ferry Port? It's a great spot to enjoy some time.

Looking for some other close-by places? Chintheche is about 30 kilometres to the southwest, so jump in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Mzuzu, 40 kilometres northwest of Nkhata Bay, is also worth a day trip.

It's hard to find a better way to discover the surrounding landscapes than on a stimulating adventure. Join in on some mountain biking or mountain climbing and get your blood pumping!

Don't know where to start first? Often the best way to really see a place is to join a couple of tours. The region boasts some outstanding guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and wildlife safaris.

For those who want to get out and get wet, why not make a splash with a few watersports like swimming or snorkeling? All you need is some suntan lotion and an adventurous spirit.

There is no better way to get to know a destination than to literally take a big bite out of it! You're invited to discover Malawi by tasting some of its most tantalizing food and drink.

Want some insight into the local fare? We recommend tasting corn and potato, two traditional ingredients used in some of the dishes here.

No food-obsessed traveller would visit Nkhata Bay without tucking into one or two of the signature dishes, such as nthochi (bread) and biltong (jerky like beef).

You may be eating yourself into a bigger set of trousers, but nthochi (banana bread) is certainly worth it. This well-known dessert will have your taste buds tingling at the very sight of it.

Want to add some fire to your evening? A couple of rounds of Gold Label brandy should do the trick! Straight up or mixed — it's your call!

If you've got the good luck to be in Nkhata Bay on the 6th of July, get ready to party! Republic Day sees crowds of locals celebrating this auspicious date.

Having difficulty bidding farewell? Don't worry. This stunning region will always be here to welcome you back.

When you're all set to fly home, give yourself ample time to head to Mzuzu Airport (ZZU). Sitting 35 kilometres to the northwest from downtown Nkhata Bay, this is the closest terminal.

"Pleasant lakeside cabins; very responsive staff; good prices; fantastic views of the lake. Beach consists of rocks; access road poor; located in a village which can be noisy. Owner very pleasant and accommodating. Clean, and would stay again, but not appropriate for a "luxury" lakeside stay."
