Holidays in Nuorgam

Nuorgam is a destination that has loads of cool stories to tell. If you reckon your life's been a bit vanilla lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It's located 1,100 kilometres north of Helsinki, the national capital of Finland.

Would you like to venture outwards a bit? Tana is 20 kilometres to the northeast of Nuorgam and Utsjoki is 60 kilometres to the southwest. Jump in the car and find out what's going on out there!

Spend a day strolling around Vadso Church, Vadso Museum and the Gjenreisning Monument. They are all pretty close to the middle of Vadso, 70 kilometres away. More time to kill? Vadso Park and the Tuomainengården ought to also be on your travel list.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while visiting Upper Lapland. Give your taste buds a little love as well by trying the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you haven't truly experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

This region has some unique recipes centred on traditional ingredients. You'll discover berries and beef chicken are two essential elements in many of the meals.

There's always a local plate or two that you need to experience, and when you're in Nuorgam, poronkäristys (sauteed reindeer) is among them. Hernekeitto (pea soup) is another traditional recipe that's not to be missed.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's no coincidence. There's no more delightful way to say goodbye to your worries than with mustikkapiirakka (blueberry pie)riisipuuro (rice pudding), a treat that's often found on dining tables here.

If you're feeling rather thirsty and want to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we recommend Olvi. Look out for happy hour, make some new pals and bottoms up!

Salmiakki Koskenkorva is worth a try. Straight up or mixed? The bartender will have some taste bud-tingling recommendations.

Ask any avid traveller and they'll tell you that the best way to get more out of your time away is to try out a couple of the local phrases. First off the bat, have a go at saying 'Onnea!'. This translates as 'good luck'. 'Haluaisitko tanssia kanssani?', which means 'would you like to dance?', is also quite common.

Celebrated throughout the whole country, Independence Day takes place on the 6th of December. If you're lucky enough to be here on this important day, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in all the action!

"Nähdään" doesn't need to sound so final. Why not hang onto a few European euros for your next holiday?

If you're travelling via air, it's a wise idea to map out your route to the terminal beforehand. From the centre of Nuorgam, you'll need to travel approximately 350 kilometres west to Langnes Airport (TOS), the closest airport.

"Eneste kunne vært kost og støvbrett i hyttene. Der er begrenset rengjøring i hyttene iflg stedet selv. De fleste turister gjør litt renhold før de forlater. Micro på felleskjøkken hadde vært ok. Ellers flott og fredelig sted å slappe av på."
