Holidays in Oama

Awesome! Your annual leave's been approved. Now all you need to do is say hasta la vista to office life for a while and book a ticket to Oama — ASAP!

The nation's capital, Tokyo, can be found roughly 900 kilometres to the northeast of Oama.

You may find some enchanting seashells as you walk down the shoreline at Momochi Beach.

Take some deep breaths of fresh air and appreciate the natural surroundings of Mount Aso. It's situated 45 kilometres away from Oama. You'll also discover a bit of peace and quiet at Aso National Park, 45 kilometres away.

Feel like a bit of exercise? Burn off some of those holiday calories with a nice, long walk around Toge no Chaya Park. You can also have a look around for native plants and critters at Ishigamiyama Park.

There's nothing more exciting than the atmosphere of live soccer! Watch the Roasso Kumamoto in action on their home ground at KKWing Stadium, a terrific venue 19 kilometres away in Kumamoto.

Hang your feet from the chairlift at Tenzan Ski Resort as you consider your next run. Along with Gokase Highland Ski & Snowboard, this winter wonderland offers some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the region.

If you're thinking about expanding your horizons, go 6 kilometres northeast to Gyokuto-machi. It's here you'll find the Reigando Temple and Kakibaru Trout Hatchery. We also recommend trying out Tamana, 9 kilometres to the northwest, for the Tabaruzaka Museum and Tabaruzaka Park.

Kumamoto, 11 kilometres to the southeast, may be worthy of a day trip. Use it as a base when swinging by Kumamoto Castle, the Honmyo-ji Temple and Hosokawa Gyobutei. If you're still not convinced, other nearby sights include the Kumamoto Prefectural Traditional Crafts Centre and the Suizenji Gardens.

To truly experience a place is to taste the local food and drink, so prepare to chomp, chew, slurp and sip your way through Kumamoto. The only thing you need to bring with you is a decent appetite!

A traditional meal here often includes beef and noodles, two regularly used ingredients for which the area is famous for plating up.

While Oama offers an assortment of culinary delights, don't miss tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup). Considered regional specialties, you'll have to add them to your must-eat list if you really want a true taste of the region.

Dessert is always OK on holiday, so why feel guilty for indulging in some anpan (sweet roll)? It's worth every magnificent calorie!

To beer or not to beer? That is the question. Of course, the answer should always be beer. While you're in this neck of the woods, Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen is the one you want.

Junmaishu is the go-to spirit for many locals in Kumamoto. Order a few shots and enjoy that warm glow!

Don't let a difference in language get in the way of a fun time! Make your journey to Kumamoto a more fulfilling one by learning some phrases in the local language. Try to get your lips around 'Dōmo arigatō'. It translates to 'thank you'. One more to commit to memory is 'Konbanwa', meaning 'good evening'.

Planning to be here around the 23rd of December? What good luck. Each year on this day, the whole country bands together to celebrate Birthday of Emperor Akihito.

Like all good things, your trip to Oama will eventually come to an end. When it's finally time to depart, say "Sayōnara" and spend your remaining holiday allowance on some unique keepsakes.

Endless security checkpoints, delayed flights and lost baggage. Airports can be very stressful. Give yourself extra time to get to Fukuoka Airport (FUK). Located 85 kilometres to the north, it's the closest terminal.
