I was only there for one night but it was clean, quiet and comfortable. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was a buffet with lots of choice. The hotel has a fantastic situation with wonderful views and is ideally placed for exploring Oban.

A friendly hotel.
The staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It's a shame they were rushed off their feet and had to keep running from reception to the bar to serve people. The building was a bit tired and there were brown patches on the ceiling and bulging/blown wall paper from historic leaks in my bedroom and along the corridor. Stunning views from the bar and the hotel is centrally located.

The property has a fantastic location and I certainly can see the appeal of booking here, however that’s about as far as I can go with it. The property itself has been left behind. It’s worn out, tired and needs a heck of a lot of rejuvenation to mirror the price they are asking for per night. Oban was always a dream destination of mine and now I leave feeling a little sad for it. The Great Western Hotel is a stretch. The Average Western Hotel is a better description. I asked to change rooms due the child sized bed but was quite rudely told no it’s what I booked and the rest of the hotel was booked up. I checked on line and it wasn’t. You make what you will with that. I would have been happy to pay for the upgrade. Oh well. I really should have taken photos for scale.

This property was beautiful and in a lovely location at the end of the waterfront. The views from the rooms were spectacular and accommodations, while small, were comfortable, clean, and functional. The one major drawback to this property was the food. We had dinner in the hotel and all three meals were poorly made. The breakfast, something that seemed simple and errorproof, was also bad. The sausage had an odd and unpleasant aftertaste, the potato scones were hard as a rock, the eggs were overcooked and hard. And none of the food at either meal was cheap. We should have ventured out into town for our meals and in the future, we will. I would stay at this hotel again, but avoid the food.

Great staff. Property could do with an update and would be good to be able to lock the room door from the inside or at least have a security chain.

Would be a great hotel with a lot of TLC.
Start with the positive, fantastic view from the room but at a price. No parking available as all already taken! I don’t expect to pay £165 a night for a three star hotel and then pay to park in a public car park. The food was reasonably priced but mediocre at best. No hot water in the morning as there was a problem with the boiler. The hotel is in desperate need of some TLC. Many of the windows are rotten and ours had a towel against it to soak up the leak. Breakfast was a positive, good choice and plenty of it although no fried eggs.

Lots of problems. Wotif should not be selling these rooms as they do not meet standards. Once upon a time this hotel would have been grand and wonderful. It has been severely let go and is now barely functioning. Our first 24 hours there was no hot water at the hotel. We were told a boiler went out – and the way we were told, it seemed like this might be a fairly regular occurrence. It took until the next day to get it back up and running. The whole hotel was on ice cold showers. Brrr… The last 24 hours I had NO water at all. Nothing. The list of other amenities that did not work includes the TV, the coffee machine, and the water pressure. Sorry to say, none of the staff were surprised at any of it. And unable to fix anything and wouldn't engage to help. Seems to be a poor culture from the top down, as the staff are nice enough but not wanting to take responsibility. It’s always – “not my Job” or “don’t know how to help” responses. Sadly, the location is fantastic and what the hotel SHOULD be is incredible; IF it had been kept up. Our rooms were big and faced the harbour. Little things were frustrating like not replacing towels, cheap soap and facilities, but water problems as above are major for travellers. There are no phones in the rooms to get assistance when things don’t work either. Guests complaining at reception are constant. However, the responses come down to, we sell the rooms anyway so it doesn't matter. Don't recommend.
