Holidays in Paraiso
When your boss is on your back cos you've chucked too many sickies, it's time to take a breather from the nine-to-five and say hello to Paraiso!
The nation's capital, Santo Domingo, is situated roughly 150 kilometres to the east of Paraiso.
Does a sunrise with the sea as your backdrop sound like one of the best ideas yet? Then pull out your map and head to San Rafael Beach, 9 kilometres to the northeast.
You don't have to travel too far to uncover some superb natural sights. Jump in the car and head in the direction of Jaragua National Park, 40 kilometres away from Paraiso, for a relaxed day. Or maybe Sierra del Bahoruco National Park is more your style? It's situated just 50 kilometres away.
Be sure to remember Bahoruco & La Ciénaga. It's a terrific place to check out if you've got time.
Would you like to venture outwards a little? Barahona is 20 kilometres to the northeast of Paraiso and Las Salinas is 35 kilometres to the north. Get in the car and discover what's going on out there!
Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your enthusiasm for both by getting out and sampling the local food and drink offerings at various bars, restaurants and cafés in town.
Wondering about some of the most common ingredients that are used here? Prepare to taste chicken and plantains in a few of your meals.
While in Paraiso, dine like a local. That means tucking into a meal of la bandera (meat, beans and rice) or tostones (fried plantains), a couple of the area's specialty dishes.
Because a life without dessert isn't worth living, you should definitely spoil yourself with some dulce de coco (coconut milk dessert). This sweet treat represents the area in just one mouthful.
To beer or not to beer? Of course, the answer is always beer. While you're in this neck of the woods, The One is the one you want.
Need something with a kick? You have to try out Cuba libre. Ask the bartender if it's good in any mixed drinks or cocktails. If that fails, raise your shot glass and enjoy it straight!
Make an effort to knock down that old language barrier by learning to say a few words in the local tongue. You'll gain a more enriching experience and a few new buddies while you're at it! '¡Que pase un buen día!' means 'have a nice day'. 'Buenas noches', which means 'good evening', is also rather common.
If you're planning on going to Paraiso in February, you'll want to be here on the 27th for Independence Day. There's always plenty of excitement in the air leading up to this day of national celebration.
With just a little bit of your travel allowance left in your wallet and some incredible memories that will last a lifetime, say one last "Hasta la vista" to Paraiso.
