Your last vacay feel like it was years ago? Don't stress — book a ticket to Peto and you'll be heading off before you know it!

It's situated 1,050 kilometres to the east of Mexico's capital, Mexico City.

Make your stay an educational one by learning the history of Peto Main Square.

Do you have an interest in the area's religious side? Pay a visit to Church of Saint Joseph.

Looking for some other nearby destinations? Tzucacab is only 18 kilometres to the west, so hop in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Jose Maria Morelos, 45 kilometres southeast of Peto, is also worth the journey.

You may feel the urge to set up camp in Chichen Itza for a little bit. This place is 75 kilometres away and quite close to Pyramid of Kukulkan, Court of the Thousand Columns and Cenote Ik kil. Some other nearby sights are El Caracol and Kukulcan Pyramid.

It's hard to find a better way to experience the local region than on a stimulating adventure. Sign yourself up for some hiking or caving and get your heart pumping!

If your littlest travellers need some time out from sightseeing, why not take them out for a relaxing day of shore fishing or picnicking?

Sure, it's quite nice to be alongside the water, but it's a whole lot more exciting to be in or on it! Don't pass up the opportunity to have a shot at some of the region's fantastic watersports, such as swimming and snorkeling.

Spend some time inside exploring the hidden treasures of the region's art museums, history museums, art galleries and craft workshops.

After something outside that will suit the whole family? The surrounding area is home to some fantastic open-air markets.

If you're intrigued by history, plan an outing to the region's ruins, traditional villages, old towns, historic mansions and archeological sites. Do some research beforehand or enlist the services of the nearest tour guide.

Learn about how religion plays a prominent role in the lives of the people who call Peto home by visiting a couple of the local churches, cathedrals and shrines.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to combine your two loves by eating and drinking your way around Yucatan.

A staple ingredient in the food here is avocados. One more is bitter oranges. They're worth getting a taste for if you're not already a fan.

Don't miss the chance to try pollo pibil (chicken with axiote sauce) or sopa de lima (chicken and tortilla soup with lime). These signature meals are what Yucatan is all about.

Experienced travellers will usually make time to learn a few expressions in the local tongue. You'll find that being able to communicate with the local people isn't just useful, it's really fun too! Try to pronounce 'Muchas gracias'. It translates to 'thank you'. Another one for the memory bank is '¡Hola!', meaning 'hello'.

If you've got the good luck to be in Peto on the 16th of September, get ready to have a ball! Independence Day sees many of the locals joining together to celebrate.

"Hasta la vista" doesn't have to mean farewell forever. Why not put away a few Mexican pesos for your next holiday here?

With a little preparation, making it to Cancun International Airport (CUN), the closest airport, shouldn't be too difficult. It's approximately 240 kilometres northeast of downtown Peto.
