Holidays in Portsmouth

Can't even with everything anymore? We hear ya. Tell your boss buh-bye, file those bills under 'Nope not today' and forget about real life in Portsmouth!

Of course, it isn't just the buildings and sights that make a city unique — there's also the people. In this part of Southern New Hampshire, there's 21,000 of them.

The state capital, Concord, sits 65 kilometres west of this destination, while Kittery is located 4 kilometres northeast.

An afternoon at Water Country or the Portsmouth Children's Museum is a great opportunity for a bit of quality time with the family. If that isn't enough to wear the young ones out, why not visit Casino Cascade Water Slide or Dover Bowl Family Fun Center as well?

After a day filled with sightseeing, it must be about time for a round of beer. This area is known for its breweries, so all you need to do is walk outside and take your pick! If it's simply too hard to choose, the Red Hook Brewery and the Portsmouth Brewery are two that come highly recommended.

Start a big night out with some high-stakes gaming and bright, sparkling lights at the Ocean Gaming Casino. It's the perfect place to get the good times rolling!

You don't need to be a gardener to vibe on the beautiful floral displays and immaculate garden beds at the Fuller Gardens. Go for a wander along its meandering paths and enquire about any scheduled talks or tours.

Unfurl your blanket and watch the clouds drift by at a green oasis like Prescott Park and Gilman Park. Rochester Common and Exeter Recreation Park are a few more spots where you can soak up some greenery.

Slip on some comfortable walking shoes and get ready for adventure. There are plenty of nature reserves around this area that are just waiting to be explored. The clean, crisp air and natural surroundings at Odiorne Point State Park and Adams Point are as energising as it gets. Bellamy River Wildlife Management Area and Rye Harbor State Park are two more that are worth a look.

If you're in need of a few peaceful places to compose yourself and maybe even learn a thing or two, go to Albacore Park and the Seacoast Fire Museum. Check for walking tours or just study the interesting exhibits on your own. If you've got the time, also go to Rochester Historical Society Museum and Three Graces Gallery.

Showcasing a collection of the latest and greatest in science advancements, the Seacoast Science Center offers everything you need to keep your mind buzzing.

Appreciate the impressive works on display at the Nahcotta. If you see anything that particularly captures your eye, make sure to find out about the creator.

Travel back through time to discover the characters and events that have contributed to the growth of the Portsmouth region at the Strawbery Banke Museum and the American Independence Museum. The Woodman Institute and the Portsmouth Athenaeum are also worth an excursion for an even greater insight into the past.

Take a step back in time at the University of New Hampshire and John Paul Jones House Museum. They're brilliant places to gain a real understanding of Portsmouth's history. If that's not enough to satisfy the history fanatic in you, also swing by Governor John Langdon House Museum and Wentworth Gardner and Tobias Lear Houses.

Go for a walk along the border walls and get to know the turbulent history of Fort Constitution Historical Site, a complex that was instrumental in defending the region.

Whether you're spiritual or not, St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea are superb places to enjoy some quiet contemplation.

You might feel like you've ticked everything off your list after seeing Portsmouth's main attractions, but don't be too sure. There are still a few surprises left. Why not venture to the Music Hall and the Wentworth by the Sea Golf Club? The Leddy Center for the Performing Arts and the Seabrook Science & Nature Center are some other options.
