Holidays in Rabaraba

Yep. Papua New Guinea is kinda off the beaten track. But let's be honest, who wants to follow the tourist trail anyway? Besides, there's heaps to see in this spectacular region (not least of all its unmissable rural landscapes and beaches). Base yourself in Rabaraba and you can check it all out from there.

Papua New Guinea's capital city, Port Moresby, is situated 300 kilometres to the west of Rabaraba.

Do you want to venture outwards a little? Baibara is 25 kilometres to the north of Rabaraba and Wedau is 30 kilometres to the southeast. Get in the car and discover what's going on out there!

When you want to release the adventurer within, sign yourself up for some mountain climbing. That said, there aren't many better ways to see the local region than with a bit of hiking.

Creating your own trip from scratch can be fun, but every so often it's quite a relief to let somebody else take control for a while. Guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours offer an enjoyable way to uncover the region.

Interested in spending time by the water? Add a splash of excitement to your trip with some swimming or snorkeling.

Explore the region's craft workshops. They are excellent places to shelter in when the rain starts bucketing down.

On the hunt for an outdoor activity that will suit the whole family? The surrounding area boasts some pleasant open-air markets.

Get to know the region's secrets by paying a visit to a few of the close-by war relics and monuments. If a tour guide isn't around, do some research of your own.

There's a world full of amazing flavours waiting to tap dance across your taste buds in Papua New Guinea. With plenty of delectable things to indulge in, all you need to take along is a hearty appetite — and perhaps your stretchiest trousers.

Searching for some insight into the local food? We recommend trying breadfruit (ulu) and coconuts, two staples which make up a range of dishes here.

There's no need to agonise over the menu while in Rabaraba. Dive straight in and taste the area's specialties, such as chicken pot and kokoda fish.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so give up counting calories and lay into one of the most well-known after-dinner treats, saksak (dumplings made with sugar and sago).

Delicious food, dancing and music — national celebrations show us the best of what a country has to offer. Be sure to join in with the locals on Independence Day on the 16th of September.

Time spent discovering the breathtaking Papua New Guinea region is an enriching experience, and it's sure to have touched you with its magic. But alas, all good things must eventually come to an end.

Jackson International Airport (POM), the closest airport, is some 290 kilometres to the west from the centre of Rabaraba. Map a route, pack up your suitcase and set an alarm — and don't hit the snooze button too many times!
