With our first shower at the property I smelled mold and immediately alerted the booking manager. I was told that the building's pipes smell after a heavy rain and that there is nothing to worry about. I pushed it from my mind and went out to sightsee. In the mornings, after showering, I noticed my asthma flaring up and I was sneezing with itchy throat/eyes/etc. I figured I had allergies and went about sightseeing but would feel better out of the unit. After my symptoms became more severe I put it all together that we had been breathing in black mold spores with EACH SHOWER we took.
It was hard to see the mold as it blends into the black shower tile and because the bathroom lighting is very poor. It wasn't until we shined our phone flashlights into the tiny shower did we see all the black mold EVERYWHERE. Over all that time of being repeatedly exposed, I became very ill. While I did feel better after leaving the property the next morning, I still had headaches, inflamed sinuses, a cough, and trouble breathing with asthma wheezing for WEEKS even after we returned home.
Black mold is incredibly serious and a health hazard and I am so fortunate that our 3 year old daughter was not harmed. To date, the property (who couldn't care less) and Hotels.com has refused to provide compensation for this situation. I trusted Hotels.com to provide a safe and reputable place for me and my family to stay and instead we were put in a hazardous situation with zero consumer protection.
