Holidays in Samburu

Been burning the candle at both ends? Desperate for a break and a few quiet nights? Samburu might just be the ticket. It's set among the mountains, valleys and savannahs of Kenya — nice and not too touristy. (We reckon you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the doona by sunset!)

The country's capital, Nairobi, is located roughly 220 kilometres to the south of Samburu.

Searching for a bit of time in the natural world? Hop in the car and head in the direction of Mt. Shaba, 35 kilometres from Samburu. Alternatively, savour a breath of fresh air at Shaba National Reserve - Natorbi Ogura Gate, 25 kilometres away.

Do you want to venture out a little bit? Archers Post is 20 kilometres to the east of Samburu and Shaba is 20 kilometres to the northeast. Get in the car and find out what's happening out there!

Confused about what to see and do first? Sometimes the best way to do it all is to hop on a tour. The region offers interesting wildlife spotting tours and wildlife safaris.

Stroll through the doors of the region's craft workshops and take in everything that they have to offer.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, you probably think travel is too. Combine your hunger for both by going out and sampling the food and drink offerings at some of the bars, cafés and restaurants in town.

If you're poring over a menu, there's a strong chance you'll come across meals with potato or maize. They're two ingredients regularly used in the fare here.

There's no need to dither over the menu while in Samburu. Get stuck right in and sink your teeth into some of the regional specialties, such as ugali (cornmeal) and irio (mashed peas and potato mix).

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's no coincidence. There's no tastier way to let your concerns melt away than with chilled banana cream, a treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

Don't forget to mark the 12th of December in your diary. In Samburu this means one thing — Independence Day. A major day of festivities, this is a wonderful time to travel to the country.

Like to know where the closest airport is? Well, it's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) and you'll find it 220 kilometres to the south.
