When your boss is on your back cos you've chucked too many sickies, it's time to ditch the corporate cubicle and say hello to San Tia!

It lies 280 kilometres to the northwest of the country's capital, Hanoi.

There's no need to go too far to witness some wonderful natural sights. Find a set of wheels and head to Fan Si Pan, 30 kilometres away from San Tia, for a laid-back day. Or maybe Sapa Lake is more your cup of tea? It's situated just 35 kilometres away.

Take some time out from the bells and whistles of modern technology by whiling away an hour or two at Cong Vien Park.

Travel 6 kilometres to the southwest and you'll stumble upon Lai Chau. It's home to some awesome attractions, such as Ho Thuy Son Monument and Lai Chau Plaza.

Whether it's for shopping or to see the sights, travellers often make the journey to Hekou, 45 kilometres to the east. The Thuy Hoa Park, the Den Mau Temple and the China-Vietnam Border Crossing are all nearby. That being said, make sure you don't pass up Hekou Customs Site and Gushan Cave Ancient Site either.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while visiting Lai Chau. Give your taste buds a little loving too by indulging in the local food and drink. After all, you haven't truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Do you love mint? What about pepper? Whether you're wild about them or not, they are two key ingredients you'll often find in dishes here.

There's always a local meal or two that you need to tick off the list, and when you're in San Tia, gỏi cuốn (spring rolls) is certainly one of them. Bánh cuốn (rice noodle roll) is another much-loved dish that's not to be missed.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't think that's a coincidence. There's no more heavenly way to let your problems melt away than with bánh cam (sweet rice sesame balls), a sweet treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

Make the most of your transit time by learning some expressions in the local tongue. Try to pronounce 'Chúc ngủ ngon'. It translates as 'good night'. Perhaps you'll find 'Chúc sức khoẻ!' a little bit easier to say? It means 'cheers/good health!'.
