Does enjoying a cool afternoon breeze by the seaside sound tempting? Then make your way to Miyazaki Waterfront Park, 55 kilometres to the northeast.

The relaxing sounds of nature are waiting for you at Mount Sakurajima. It sits just 40 kilometres away, so you needn't be stuck on the road all day. Shinmoedake, 45 kilometres away, is another recommended option.

Don't just watch sport on the television, feel it, experience it and live it at Sun Marine Stadium! Located 45 kilometres away in Miyazaki, it's the ideal place to get your fix whether you’re cheering for the home or away team.

If you're contemplating expanding your horizons, journey 19 kilometres east to Kushima. It's here you'll discover the Nichinankushima Golf Course and Kojima Island. We also recommend heading to Mimata, 25 kilometres to the north, for Hayamizu Park and Shiibae Park.

Nichinan, 25 kilometres to the northeast, is a great day trip. You can use it as a port of call when stopping by Obi Castle Remains, Udo Shrine and Obi-jō. If you need more convincing, other close by sights include Yoshokan and Ihei Yamamoto House.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're here, you probably think travel is too. Combine your love of both by getting out and trying the local food and drink offerings at the restaurants, cafés and bars in town.

A standard meal here tends to include beef and noodles, two essential elements for which the local region is famous for plating up.

While in Shibushi, you should eat like the locals do. That means sitting down to a meal of tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup), some of the region's distinctive dishes.

You can never have too much dessert on holiday, so why not indulge in a little anpan (sweet roll)? It's worth every heavenly calorie!

You can't fully understand this region until you've tasted the local beer. Whether you're looking to satisfy your thirst or get a bit of liquid courage to meet new people, ask for Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

To get the party started, enjoy a shot of junmaishu. Sip it neat or ask your barkeeper for any mixer suggestions.

Dedicated travellers will often make an effort to learn a few words in the local tongue. You'll find that being able to exchange some words with the locals isn't just useful, it's great fun too! 'Isshoni odorimasenka?' may be very handy. It translates to 'would you like to dance?'. Another one to add to the memory bank is 'Dōmo arigatō', meaning 'thank you'.

Every year on the 23rd of December, Birthday of Emperor Akihito occupies a special place in the locals' hearts. It offers a fantastic chance to discover the country's history and kick up your heels while you're at it!

You may be poor in Japanese yens by the end of your trip, but you'll be rich in unique experiences. "後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" Shibushi!

If you're catching a plane home, it's probably a wise idea to decide a route to the terminal beforehand. From the middle of Shibushi, you'll need to go around 45 kilometres northwest to Kagoshima Airport (KOJ), the closest airport.
