Holidays in Sulitjelma

Sulitjelma is a place that has loads of cool stories to tell. If you feel like your life's been a bit vanilla lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

It's located 850 kilometres to the north of Norway's capital, Oslo.

Break out on a trip to some nearby natural sights. 30 kilometres out of Sulitjelma, Rago National Park is waiting to be experienced. Padjelanta National Park, 40 kilometres away, is another lovely place to kick back and relax.

You might like to consider the Gruvemuseum. It's a nice place to check out if you've got time.

Fauske is 14 kilometres to the northwest and worth a day trip. After even more ideas? Saltdal, 35 kilometres to the southwest of Sulitjelma, ought to be your second stop.

Planning to head to Bodo? This destination is only 75 kilometres to the west. If you're staying here a little while, grab a map and circle the Norwegian Aviation Museum, Bodin Church and St. Eystein's Catholic Church. Also consider taking a peek at Mount Ronvik and the Nordland Museum.

Pander to your inner explorer and discover the local landscape with some tobogganing. Alternatively, maybe you'd prefer to go snowmobiling?

A day full of sun and clear skies is a superb opportunity to venture outside and spend a lazy afternoon cycling. If the agreeable weather lasts, you could also enjoy some shore fishing.

From canoeing to sea kayaking, there's no shortage of ways to get out on the water in Nordland. Just don't forget to bring your sunscreen!

Snowboarding is one of the most invigorating ways to keep warm when thermometer plunges. If you're still shivering, what about some skiing too?

If you find yourself caught in some bad weather, run for cover in one of the region's art museums, nature museums, history museums and art galleries.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a better way to discover the local area than by visiting its open-air exhibits and lighthouses.

If you're looking to discover more about the area's past, swing by a few old towns. Consult your guidebook, do a bit of research and head to the most interesting one.

Find out about how religion plays a prominent role in the day-to-day lives of those who call Sulitjelma home by looking around one or two cathedrals.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Nordland. Give your taste buds a little TLC too by sampling the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you can't say you've truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Are you partial to moose? How about whale meat? Whether you're into them or not, they are two ingredients you'll often find in the cuisine here.

Of course, you can't head home from Sulitjelma without sinking your teeth into svinekoteletter (pork chops) or barents ham (whale meat dish). Popular with residents and considered regional classics, they are an essential experience for anyone who loves food.

You're on holiday, so why not get stuck into some krumkake (thin rolled cake filled with cream)? It's worth every single calorie!

On ice or neat — the bar person ought to know the best way to have karsk (coffee and vodka). When the night calls for something with a bit more zing, this is the tipple to order!

Start knocking down that old language barrier by memorising some expressions in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling experience and some new friends while you're at it! To start, try to get your tongue around 'Takk'. This translates as 'thank you'. Maybe you'll find 'Hva koster denne?' easier to say? It means 'how much is this?'.

Celebrated throughout the whole country, Constitution Day is held on the 17th of May. If you're going to be here on this important day, it'll be hard not to get swept up in the excitement!

Thankfully Sulitjelma will stay just where you found it, so this "Ha det bra" has no need to be your last!

If you'll be flying in and out, you'll probably be using Bodo Airport (BOO). It's 75 kilometres to the west. Pack up your suitcase, map out a route and set that alarm clock!
