Holidays in Taiji

Relaxation. Adventure. Relaxation. Adventure. Off to Taiji but can't make up your mind what kinda getaway you're after? Stop stressing! We'll help sort it out.

It's located 420 kilometres southwest of Tokyo, the nation's capital.

You won't have to be stuck on the highway all day to witness a bit of nature. Just 10 kilometres out of Taiji, Nachi Waterfall is a fabulous place to get out into the fresh air. Even more tranquil surrounds await at Hashigui-iwa Rocks, 18 kilometres away.

What about stopping by Taiji Kujirahama Park? It's a great place to spend some extra time.

Looking for lots more things to see and do? Head to Nachikatsuura, 8 kilometres northwest of Taiji, for Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and the Fudarakusanji Temple. Alternatively, Kozagawa-cho is 14 kilometres to the southwest, and it's here you'll find Kushimoto Ohashi Bridge and Umikongo Rocks.

Heading to Koya? This place is 75 kilometres to the northwest. If you're staying here a while, make sure you visit the Okunoin, the Koyasan University and the Kongobuji Temple. Also consider taking a peek at the Konpon Daito Pagoda and the Koyasan Lingbao Museum.

To really experience a place is to immerse yourself in its food and drink, so get set to munch, crunch, sip and slurp your way across Wakayama. The only thing you need to take with you is a healthy appetite!

Once you grab a table and leaf through a café or restaurant menu, you'll quickly notice that beef and noodles are a few ingredients commonly found in dishes here.

While Taiji offers a variety of culinary comforts, you shouldn't leave without sampling tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and yudofu (tofu simmered with kelp). Considered regional specialties, you'll have to put them on your must-eat list if you really want to taste this destination.

Because a life without dessert isn't a life worth living, you should definitely acquaint yourself with anpan (sweet roll). This sweet treat tells the story of the region in just one mouthful.

If you're feeling a bit thirsty and would love to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we suggest Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Visit during happy hour, make some new pals and drink in the atmosphere!

For something that'll put a few hairs on your chest, order one or two shots of junmaishu. Drink it down straight or ask your barkeeper for mixer suggestions.

Ask any avid traveller and they'll tell you that the best way to squeeze more from your time away is to try out some local words and phrases. 'Oyasumi nasai' may be very handy. It translates to 'good night'. Another one for the memory bank is 'Konnichiwa', meaning 'hello'.

What better way to learn about a place than by witnessing a day of national celebration? There'll be lots of festivities taking place for Birthday of Emperor Akihito on the 23rd of December.

You may be poor in Japanese yens by the end of your trip, but you'll be rich in unique experiences. "Sayōnara" Taiji!

When the time comes to pack up your suitcase and hit the tarmac, the closest terminal, Kansai International Airport (KIX), is 110 kilometres to the northwest.
