Soak up the scenery from the chairlift at Zao Hot Springs Ski Resort as you consider your next run. Along with Shichikasyuku Ski Area, this snowy playground offers some of the best skiing in the region.

Nanakita Park and Sendai-Izumi Premium Outlets are not far from the centre of Tomiya-machi, 7 kilometres to the southeast. Looking for more? Shikama-cho, 12 kilometres to the north of Taiwa, is known for Matsumoto Family Residence and Sanbongi Yamanami Road Station.

Take a day trip and see some sights in Rifu. This destination is 18 kilometres to the southeast and not far from the Tohoku History Museum, Taga Castle Ruins and the Urakasumi Sake Brewery. Of course, don't miss Former Kamei House and Okama Shrine either.

You may be glad you learnt 'Dōmo arigatō', which is how you say 'thank you'. Maybe you'll find 'Oyasumi nasai' easier to get your head around? This means 'good night'.

Don't forget to put the 23rd of December in your diary. In Taiwa this means one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. An important day of celebrations, this is a wonderful time of year to be in the country.

"後でお会いしましょう (Atode o ai shimashou)" doesn't need to sound so final. Why not hold onto a few Japanese yens for when you come back?

With a bit of planning, getting to Narita International Airport (NRT), the nearest airport, shouldn't be too much trouble. It's 300 kilometres to the south of the centre of Taiwa.
