We booked a private room in JHoppers. It was easy to check in. Their private onsens are easy to use and very relaxing. They have plenty of snacks to buy and they offer rice in the morning.
However, do not book on Expedia!! We made this mistake and the hotel contacted us to order dinner boxes. We responded but the hotel never got our message. The town only has 1 restaurant so if it’s closed you won’t be able to eat that night
Great affordable place to stay doing the Kumamoto Kodo. The onsen was wonderful after a long day hiking. The bunk beds were surprisingly big. Free rice in the evening and rice porridge in the morning was great because there are not many food options in town. We’ll stocked kitchen and comfortable common space. Recommended stay!
J-Hoppers was the most inexpensive place we stayed while hiking the Kumano Kodo. The majority of the clientele is younger and hiking the trail as well. This is great for building comradery with fellow hikers. My favorite part of the stay at J-Hoppers is the communal dining room where you can meet other hikers while fixing dinner. We had purchased a lunch from our previous accommodation and ate our lunch for dinner.
The hostel is clean. The private room was large enough and the shared sink and toilet stalls are plentiful. The hosts are very busy while other hikers are checking in and don't really go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. You are more or less on your own. They do provide a brief introduction to the facility but getting additional information may be difficult.
The hostel does have a nice selection of food and beverage that they sell. The onsens are nice although they were not as clean as others along the trail. There were some floatees in the water which made us feel a little uncomfortable.
The price we paid for the room wasn't that much cheaper than other accommodations which provided much more hospitality. The place was okay but there may be better options if you are looking for a private room.
The host treated me well, he told me what bus to take for the trip tomorrow, although I need to check the bus schedule later since I haven't finished the plan on that day. He gave us enough privacy. Professional it is, but it gave me a little bit solitary feeling.
We stayed in a private room, as a family of 4. Very comfortable, Onsen inside the hostel was great. Free rice at dinner and full kitchen for you to cook a family meal. Buy your own food before traveling there, fresh vegetables not available at walking distance, only packaged food.
It’s amazing to stay. Clean, friendly staff. Three private onsen. The outdoor onsen is amazing, comparable with five stars onsen hotel. Bed is comfy with some space besides and a small cabinet. Recommended !
Such a fun experience! Really clean space. Creaky floors so if you are a light sleeper, keep that in mind. Really close to the bus stop and staff were super helpful!
Great stay if your doing the Kumono Kudo June. The onsen on-site is perfect for after hiking and the staff is really friendly! Definitely recommend (free rice, coffee, tea).
At this hostel you really feel at home. Everything is efficient and well designed. Spacious and welcoming its easy to make friends. There are no shops locally so there's a good selection for sale right at the hostel!
Great area for scenery, walks and hikes. Ideal if walking the Kurama Kodo. Buses aren’t frequent. Hostel is fantastic with free rice, tea and coffee. Staff knowledgeable and friendly.
Hostel has three Onsens. They have a small shop with some essentials but no fresh fruit or vegetables. No restaurants in village so be prepared to cook for yourselves. Thank you to Kenji who drove us to Kiikatsuura.
All in all a great place.
