Holidays in Toon

As all travellers know — a life full of surprises and adventure is a life well-lived. So dig out your passport, pack your things and say hello to Toon!

The leading city of Okayama is situated within reach of Toon. You can find this bustling centre 130 kilometres to the northeast.

Katsurahama Beach and Zenigata Sunae are the places to go if you're looking for somewhere to admire ocean views.

Break free on a trip to some nearby natural beauty spots. 19 kilometres out of Toon, Hyoutan Pond is just waiting to be explored. Lake Ishitegawa Dam, 12 kilometres away, is another superb spot to kick your heels up.

When it comes to skiing and snowboarding, there are some people who are able to zoom effortlessly down any run. For others, merely staying upright is stressful enough. No matter your level of skill, you're bound to love the fresh powder at Ishizuchi Ski Area.

If you'd like to do a bit of exploring, add a trip to Matsuyama to your plan. This place is 14 kilometres to the northwest and features Matsuyama Castle and Across Shigenobu. After some more ideas? Tobe is 17 kilometres to the southwest of Toon and is known for Tobecho Tougeisoukakukan and the Tobe Zoo.

The Nankobo, Itoyama Park and the Kurushima Strait Outlook Museum are all very close to Imabari, 35 kilometres to the north. Want a few more reasons to visit? The Enmeiji Temple and the Imabari Kono Museum are not far away either.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but add travel to the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to indulge in two of your biggest loves by eating and drinking your way around Ehime.

Are you partial to beef? What about noodles? Whether you're keen on them or not, they are two popular ingredients commonly used in the cooking here.

Ask a local what dish best sums up the region and tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) will likely be the first thing they advise. Sawachi ryori (sushi and raw fish) is another regional specialty you should keep an eye out for.

If dessert is your thing, you're not going to be disappointed. Be sure to order anpan (sweet roll), a yummy treat that's guaranteed to satisfy your sugar cravings.

Is there anything more pleasurable than tossing back a glass of beer topped off with a fluffy, white head? Satiate your thirst and mingle with a few locals over some Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

Neat, mixed or in a fancy cocktail — it really doesn't matter! A shot or two of junmaishu ought to get the party started! The locals love it, and it's definitely worth tasting.

Knowing how to say a couple of words in the local tongue will make travelling through the Ehime region that little bit smoother. You'll be glad you learnt 'Dōmo arigatō', which means 'thank you'. Another one to commit to memory is 'Oyasumi nasai', meaning 'good night'.

Don't forget to put the 23rd of December in your schedule. To the locals, this means just one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. An important day of festivities, this is a wonderful time to head to the country.

When it finally comes time to leave, spend the last of your holiday allowance and wave "Sayōnara" to Toon.

Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the nearest terminal, 220 kilometres to the east. Make sure you have ample time to get there.
