Holidays in Toyo-cho

If the Chrissie money you got from Nan is burning a hole in your pocket, why not spend it on a ticket to Toyo-cho? We swear — it'll be a gift that keeps on giving!

The prominent city of Okayama is situated within reach of Toyo-cho. You'll find this major centre 130 kilometres to the north.

Katsurahama Beach and Zenigata Sunae are the perfect destinations if you're searching for somewhere to kick back and unwind.

The comforting sounds of nature await you at Todoro Fall. It lies just 19 kilometres away, so you don't have to be on the road all day. Mt. Tsurugi, 40 kilometres away, is one more popular choice.

If you have a bit of extra time in your itinerary, you might like to visit Mollusc Mugi Shell Museum.

There's even more just around the corner. Muroto, 20 kilometres to the southwest, is popular for the Shinshoji Temple and the Kongochoji Temple. Though, if the Nora Clock and the Garden of Monet Marmottan sound better to you, go 25 kilometres west from Toyo-cho to Yasuda.

Want to check out Tosa Shrine, Nishijima Gardening Park and the Zenrakuji Temple? Get moving to Nankoku, 60 kilometres to the west, and set up base. These attractions, along with the Kokubunji Temple and Gookayama Cultural Forest, are all nearby.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but add travel to the mix and it's a match made in heaven. You're invited to merge your two greatest loves by eating and drinking your way across Kochi.

A staple ingredient in the fare here is beef. One more is noodles. They're definitely worth trying out if you're not already a fan.

When in Toyo-cho, dine like a local. That means trying a plate of tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) or sawachi ryori (sushi and raw fish), a couple of the region's most distinctive dishes.

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so stop worrying about calorie counting and indulge in one of the most enticing sweet treats, anpan (sweet roll).

If you've worked up a thirst and would like to indulge in a glass of amber nectar, we suggest Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Go out for happy hour, make some new friends and drink in the atmosphere!

Junmaishu is certainly worth tasting. On ice, neat, in a cocktail? The bartender will have a few delicious recommendations.

There's more to travelling than just taking photos and sampling the local cuisine. It's also about the experiences you have with the people and their culture. Get the most out of your Kochi escape by learning a handful of local words and phrases. Try to pronounce 'Konbanwa'. It translates to 'good evening'. One more common phrase is 'Isshoni odorimasenka?' ('would you like to dance?').

What better way to get to know a place than by joining in on a day of national celebration? There'll be lots of festivities organised for Birthday of Emperor Akihito on the 23rd of December.

When it finally comes time to leave, spend the last of your holiday allowance and say one final "Sayōnara" to Toyo-cho.

Getting to your plane on time can be stressful. That being said, you'll be fine if you're well prepared. The closest terminal, Kansai International Airport (KIX), is 130 kilometres to the northeast.
