It sits 330 kilometres to the south of the country's capital, Seoul.

You'll find even more just around the corner. Jangheung, 6 kilometres to the northeast, is popular for Jangheung Council and Jeamsan Recreational Forest. Alternatively, if the Dasan Chodang and the Birthplace of Yeongnang sound better to you, head 11 kilometres west from Unju to Gangjin.

The National Maritime Research Institute of Cultural Heritage, Yudal Mountain and the Mokpo Modern History Museum are all really close to Mokpo, 50 kilometres to the northwest. Mixed or straight up — it really doesn't matter! One or two shots of cheongju (rice wine) should add some oomph to your evening! You should find it most places here, and it's most definitely worth trying.
