The Cannaregio area is very Venetian, all the shops are nearby: market, butcher, grocery store, fish, bars, restaurants, banks, supermarkets, pharmacies, all within a radius of 200/400 meters. The apartment accommodates up to 6 people.
Cannaregio is the most northerly of Venice's historic six sestieri (districts). It is the second largest sestiere in area and the largest by the population,
The Cannaregio Canal, which was the main road in the city until the construction of a rail link to the mainland, gave the district its name. Development began in the 11th century as the area was drained and parallel canals were dredged. Although elegant Arab-Normans were built opposite the Grand Canal, the region grew mainly with the working class of housing and manufacturing. The history of the Venice Ghetto is fascinatingly sparked. When on March 29, 1516, the government of the Serenissima Repubblica issued special laws, the first Ghetto in Europe was instituted. It is an area where Jews were forced to live and they could not leave from sunset at dawn. The area has been closed by doors guarded by guards and so far the hinge marks are visible there. Jews were allowed to practice only in certain professions: they were doctors, because they were the most willing and able to understand Arabic writings, money lenders, because the Catholic religion prohibited this practice, traders and " strazzarioli ”, ragsellers. However, Jews held successful positions in the city such as merchants, doctors, money lenders and other trades. The Ghetto has existed for more than two centuries, until Napoleon conquered Venice and finally opened and eliminated each door (1797): the Jews were finally free to live in other areas of the city.
In the 19th century, civil engineers built a street called Strada Nuova, through Cannaregio and a railway bridge and the road bridge were built to connect Venice directly to Mestre. Today, the district areas along the Grand Canal, from the station of the Rialto Bridge are Highly frequented by tourists, but the rest of Cannaregio is residential and relatively peaceful, with morning markets, neighborhood shops and small cafes.
When you arrive at the apartment we will ask you for the cash payment of the "Tassa di Soggiorno" that the Municipality of Venice has recently established for private apartments for rent (currently 1.5 euros / person / night). You will receive a receipt for this payment.
