Holidays in Volga

Awesome! You've had your leave signed off. Now all you've gotta do is wave goodbye to your boss and book your ticket to Volga!

Russia's capital city, Moscow, is situated roughly 180 kilometres to the southeast of Volga.

Do you like the sound of the Tver State University and the Mikhail Krug Monument? These awesome sights are in Dmitrovo-Cherkassy, located just 25 kilometres northeast of Volga. Or maybe Park Pobedy and the Tver Regional Drama Theatre are more up your alley? To see them, head to Derevnishche, 30 kilometres to the northeast.

You may get the urge to stay in Tver for a little bit. This destination is 40 kilometres to the northeast and close to Tver City Park, the Museum ME Saltykov-Shchedrin and the Monument to Michail of Tver. Other nearby sights are the Tver City Museum and Exhibition Centre and Tchaikina Museum and Expo Center.

If you're feeling tense, take the chance to try bird watching. Alternatively, wildlife watching might be more relaxing.

Step off dry land and see Tver Oblast from a different angle. With a variety of fun activities like canoeing and boating to try, it's the ideal playground for water enthusiasts.

Check out the region's art museums, history museums, craft workshops and theaters. They are particularly good places to seek refuge in when it starts bucketing down.

After something outdoors that will please the whole family? The local area is home to some lovely open-air museums.

If you're into history, you'll be excited to hear that there are a couple of ruins, traditional villages, old towns, historic bridges and historic mansions nearby. Step back in time and enjoy an insight into the region's lively past.

If you want an experience that goes beyond the physical world, consider visiting some local churches, cathedrals and monasteries. It's a great opportunity to learn about Volga's beliefs.

To truly experience a place is to immerse yourself in the local food and drink, so get ready to chomp, chew, slurp and sip your way through Tver Oblast. The only thing you need to take with you is a strong appetite!

Wondering about some of the popular ingredients that are used here? You're likely to be served rye and oats in many of your meals.

Still got a bit of room after dinner? Then put in your order for lymonnyk (lemon pie), an indulgent sweet treat.

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to toss back a beer. Schooner rather than later! Cheesy beer puns aside, don't forget to taste test Baltika Premium Lager, one of the most well-known local brews.

There's so much more to travelling than checking off attractions and eating new things. It's also about the interactions with the people and their culture. Make the most of your Tver Oblast escape by learning a couple of expressions and greetings in the local tongue. Try to pronounce 'Xotite potancevat?'. It means 'would you like to dance?'. Another common phrase is 'Dobryj den'!' ('good afternoon').

Want to get involved in the Russia Day celebrations? Mark the 12th of June in your diary and get ready to let your hair down!

"Poka!" doesn't need to sound so final. Why not hold onto a few Russian rubles for when you come back?

When the time comes to pack up your suitcase and hit the tarmac, the nearest terminal, Sheremetyevo Airport (SVO), is 150 kilometres to the southeast.
