From Warburg head 150 kilometres southeast to get to the exceptional city of Erfurt. The busy streets of a second major city, Wiesbaden, are to the south, roughly 170 kilometres away.

You don't have to venture too far to find some impressive natural sights. Warm up the car and follow your GPS to Karlsaue Park, 35 kilometres away from Warburg, for a chilled-out day. Or maybe Muhlenkopf Hill is more your type of thing? You'll find it 45 kilometres away.

Sports lovers won't be left out in the cold during their visit. Energieteam Arena is 35 kilometres away in Paderborn and an excellent place to get your sporting fix. Be sure to check the event schedule to find out what's on.

Ride the chairlift to the top of Bodefeld Hunau Ski Resort, take in the sweeping views and then ski your way back to base. For more ice-cold action, check out the slopes at Wintersportpark Sahnehang.

There's even more to see and do just down the road. Willebadessen, 10 kilometres to the north, is popular for Schloss Rheder and the Husarenmuseum Rheder. Though, if the Escheberg Golf Club and Niederelsungen Church are more your thing, head 11 kilometres southeast from Warburg to Breuna.

About 30 kilometres to the northeast, Bad Karlshafen is a place that has plenty to offer. The Deutsches Hugenotten-Museum, Ruin Krukenburg and Bad Karlshafen Town Hall are all quite close. Keep in mind, the Museum Helmarshausen and the Deutsches Huguenotten Museum are also worthwhile.

There's no better way to understand a place than to literally take a bite out of it! You're invited to explore Teutoburger Wald by tasting some of its finest food and drink.

Beans and potatoes are just a couple of typical ingredients found in many dishes here. If you don't love them already, you might by the end of your journey!

Of course, you can't visit Warburg without sampling a plate of grünkohl und kohlwurst (sausage and kale) or Rheinischer sauerbraten (marinated roast with vegetables). Popular with the locals and considered specialty dishes, they are an essential experience for any self-respecting food fan.

You may be eating yourself into a food coma, but butterkuchen (butter cake) is worth it. This much-loved dessert will make your taste buds tingle at the mere sight of it.

Are you ready for a drink? Throw back a glass or two of Schumacher Alt, a beer that needs to be on your bucket (or pint) list.

Steinhäger Gin is what most locals drink when the evening begs for something with a bigger kick. Ask the bar person for a little taste and see if it wows your taste buds.

Your time spent in Warburg is bound to be more satisfying if you put in the effort to learn a few of the local phrases. 'Wie gehts?' can be very useful. It translates to 'how are you?'. 'Guten TagServus' ('hello') is another one you may need.
