The Old Barn Croscombe

The Old Barn is a beautiful and historic holiday cottage located in Somerset, England. We offer cosy self-catered holiday accommodation for up to five people all year round.A cot is available if you need one.

The Barn is a great holiday cottage for those who want to explore the glorious Westcountry, and is within easy reach of the Mendip and Quantock Hills, Wells, Bath, Bristol and Glastonbury Festival and town.

As its name suggests, the Barn wasn’t always a holiday cottage. In fact it has had a long and varied history. It is thought it began life as the brew house for the church directly opposite and its hospital in the Middle Ages. More recently it was used as a hay barn and as a builder’s store.

The barn was listed in 1985 by English Heritage (note the English Heritage photo was taken pre-renovation!), an acknowledgement of the barn’s historical significance.

The barn lay unused, unloved and derelict for many years. When we purchased it in 2000 – having lived next door since the early 1970s – the roof was leaking and the interior was crammed with building materials and rubble. .

Our facilities
On the ground floor a large entrance hall opens on to one large fully furnished bedroom with one double bed, one single bed, a desk and a chest of drawers. There is also a modern wet room with WC and a shower and a small cupboard for coats containing a washing machine. The Barn has underfloor heating which keeps it cosy throughout the year.

Walking up the solid oak staircase you reach the gallery floor. This is the Old Barn’s main living area containing an open plan kitchen/dining/living space. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric hob, oven, fridge, microwave/grill and cooking utensils. Cutlery, crockery and glasses can be found in the sideboard.

The living space has a double futon sofa bed as well as other comfortable seating. The Barn also has a TV with DVD player and a small selection of DVDs as well as a CD player/radio. The Barn also has free wi-fi for our guests. Please note there is no TV reception in the Old Barn but the wifi is strong enough to stream if you want to watch your favourite programmes or catch up with the news.

Croscome is on the bus route to Wells and Shepton Mallet where connections to Bristol Bath and Glastonbury and Street can be taken.Castle Cary railway station is 9km away, and for Glastonbury festival period there is a shuttle bus to Shepton Mallet( 3 km ).The actual Festival site is less than 5 km away and the taxi drivers are happy to collect and deliver throughout the time of the festival both day and night.

Wells is the closest city and is well worth a visit. The cathedral is magnificent and the Bishop's palace next door with its medieval moat can be visited too. There is a lovely cafe inside the Palace walls where, while you drink a leisurely cup of tea, you can watch the croquet on the lawns in the summer. The little museum on the Green always has an interesting exhibition and the Green provides a tranquil seat or two. Before you leave the Cathedral precincts do take a look at Priests row to the north , it is the oldest inhabited street in England. Wells was used in the film Hot Fuzz as Edgar Wright went to school here. Since then Wells has been used very often as a film set and when you visit you will see why. One that comes to mind is the series Poldark. A few more are listed here 1972 The Canterbury Tales
2002 The Gathering
2005 The Libertine ( - House of Lords interior)
2007 Elizabeth, The Golden Age ( - Whitehall Palace interiors)

2012 Jack & the Giant Slayer

In Bath there are all the Georgian buildings, and of course,The Roman Baths to visit, not forgetting the thirteen museums , something for a rainy day, perhaps. My favorite museum in Bath is the costume museum in the old Assembly Rooms.(shades of Jane Austin again)

Bristol has the famous Isambard Kingdom Brunel suspension bridge and the zoo or if you like shopping there is the centre of town The Mall and the Galleries with the out of town ones at Cribbs Causeway.Or you can wander through the ancient sector of the city.

If you like walking, the Mendip hills are just behind the Old Barn and they stretch for miles in both directions.with a myriad of footpaths, right down to the coast if you are feeling energetic. The views from the top of the Mendips are wide and lovely with the Levels spread out before you and the Welsh Mountains in the distance,if you are lucky.

Bird watching is very popular on the Somerset Levels with the most spectacular murmurations of starlings in the winter months at Shapwick which is just 30 mins drive away.

The Lions of Longleat, the house and the rest of the attractions which you can drive through can be visited 40 mins away. You can easily spend a whole day there.

Stourhead gardens are a must to visit if you like Regency Landscapes and has been used in many films over the years eg several of the Jane Austin films. it takes roughly 40 mins to drive there from Croscombe.

Lyme Regis is the most beautiful seaside town on the south coast it is 1.5 hours away. There are Georgian houses and a promenade beside the sea side to enjoy and fossils to search for along the shore.

Quiet and pretty
Pretty village, calm, well situated halfway between Shepton Mallet and Wells, lovely little pub a short walk down the hill. The sofa bed was a bit short for my tall sons but would be fine for younger kids

Countryside Perfection
This is a wonderful spot to stay especially if you do not want to camp out at Glastonbury Festival we were there to help our friends at the festival. The house was the perfect place to land after a long day. The Hostess Ann was fabulous and helped us with all the questions we had and went out of her way to make our stay easy. She even told us about the bus that could take us up to the farm where the festival is. Perfect. Clean and with a working kitchen the barn is a lovely place to stay. There is a pub just a block away and we enjoyed a meal or two there too. I recommend if you find your self in this area you should stay here.

Weekend break
Charming, historical barn. A clever use of a cosy space. Spotless. All amenities you could want -but top tip, look for cutlery in the sideboard! Futon perhaps not as comfy as one might hope. But, overall, a lovely stay.

Perfect for our short stay
An open plan upstairs living area with bedroom and bathroom below… really good for price. We hired it for Christmas to visit my parents in Wells. I had two young children excited for Christmas. It would have been nice to have a Christmas tree for them so instead we lugged their presents in the car to open in Wells. A very warm little place as heated to max so might be worth mailing ahead to ask for lower settings as it’s hard to control as preset and tiny windows so fresh air is not the answer. Just my preference as my home is large and cold so adjusting was difficult. A fab place to stay.

Not suitable for 5 persons
upon arrival we discovered we had made a mistake as we thought the property had more than one bedroom (our fault must have focused on sleeps 5 part of ad) told by owner the other bed is a put you up sofa bed, this turned out to be a very uncomfortable hard bed, if you are tall you will hang over the edge lucky we are not, also don't expect a welcome pack no effort here, also ad says toilet roll provided after you pay you get an acknowledgement of payment which state only one toilet roll provided for four people for four nights ! this our third weekend away this year and have never experienced such a lack of effort by the owner (less than £3 for toilet rolls) considering the cost this should not be advertised as 5 persons accommodation as a cheap put you up bed doesn't constitute a suitable bed for adults, sleeps 2 adults and 1 child at best.

A beautiful home in a truly glorious spot
My husband and I recently enjoyed a lovely couple of days at The Old Barn and couldn’t recommend it more highly. Anne was a lovely and communicative host who left us in peace but we knew she was there if we needed her, and she kindly provided all the information we needed in advance of our trip. The old barn itself is a beautiful old building with lots of character. It’s quirky upsidedown living space was rather cool! The place was clean, cosy, nice and cool in the unseasonably hot weather, and just a really glorious place to return to after a day exploring Somerset. It truly is a little gem in a beautiful Somerset village. The beds are comfy, the shower is great, and it’s just a lovely place to be, well equipped for self catering if you need it. There is a pub two minutes walk away and a beautiful church just opposite the barn. It is so well-placed to explore the countryside, with places like Shepton Mallet, Wells, Bath etc, all reachable within 40 mins. We absolutely loved it, it was great value and we’d certainly stay again. Thank you Anne for sharing your lovely barn!

Lovely find - great location for seeing Somerset
The cottage is set between Shepton Mallet and Wells in a sleepy village. There is a wonderful old church directly opposite the property. This delightful barn conversion was great for a short stay while we hunted down the best food and drink Somerset could offer. The host lives a stones throw away and is on hand if you have any issues. We felt very well taken care of by Ann, who can offer tips about visiting local spots and how to get the best out of your stay. The accomodation would easily fit 4 - two downstairs in the master bedroom and two on the main living area on the futon. Wifi signal is great but you might need to step out for a phone signal - nothing to do with the property it's just set in hills so cell tower signal might be weaker. The kitchen has a great multioven for all your cooking needs and well stocked cupboards so you won't need to bring much with you. There is a small walk in shower in the downstairs bathroom. In the mainroom we found a selection of dvds and books - TV comes with a DVD player. The location is also served by Just Eat and a couple of the local eateries from either Shepton or Wells. We ordered a lovely pizza from a local pizzeria which put Dominos to shame. The village is very quiet so if you're looking for peace and somewhere just to relax away from the world. Give this one a try. We'd definitely book again. Lynne

The Barn was even better then we expected. Bigger then it shows on the photos. We stayed with a family of five, we have three boys ages 11-18 and where able to all fit in. Really near Wells & Bath and great opportunities for walking hiking in the Mendip Hills. Especially the cheddar gorge is great and challenging!
