Holidays in Yahaba-cho

Yahaba-cho is a destination with plenty of cool stories to tell. If you think your life's been a bit boring lately, a trip here is the perfect answer!

The nation's capital, Tokyo, sits 450 kilometres to the south of Yahaba-cho.

Think about taking a picnic blanket for a leisurely lunch on the shore at Jodogahama Beach or Goishi Coast.

The relaxing sounds of nature await you at Rikuchu Kaigan National Park. It lies just 50 kilometres away, so you won't have to be stuck in a car all day. Kanagasaki Hot Spring, 50 kilometres away, is one more popular choice.

There's nothing better than jumping out of bed making your mark on a pristine slope at Appi Kogen Ski Resort. Once you've explored all the trails there, pack up your skis or snowboard and improve your technique at Tazawako Ski Resort.

Go 18 kilometres to the south and you'll discover Hanamaki. It's popular for some outstanding attractions, including Hanamaki Castle and Hanamaki Koiki Park.

Tono, 40 kilometres to the southeast, is a great little excursion Use it as a base when swinging by Unedorisama Shrine, the Fukusenji Temple and Gohyaku Rakan. If you're still not persuaded, other nearby sights include the Tōno Municipal Museum and the Tōno Folk Village.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're here, you probably think travel is too. Combine your fondness for both by getting out and sampling the local food and drink offerings at various cafés, bars and restaurants in town.

Eager to know some of the typical ingredients that are used here? Prepare to taste beef and noodles in a number of your meals.

There's always a local meal or two you absolutely have to try, and when you're in Yahaba-cho, tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) is definitely one of them. Jappa-jiru (fish gut and vegetable soup) is another local classic that you'll want to keep an eye out for.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't think that's a coincidence. There's no tastier way to let your troubles melt away than with anpan (sweet roll), a sweet treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

For fans of a good pint, look for a cosy bar and say Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen. Enjoy a glass with a side of joke-cracking and mixing with the locals.

Want to get the party going? A shot of junmaishu will do the trick! Straight up or mixed — drink it whichever way you want!

Make the most of your transit time by memorising a couple of local expressions. To start with, try to get your tongue around 'Isshoni odorimasenka?'. This translates as 'would you like to dance?'. One more for the memory bank is 'Wakarimasen', meaning 'I don't understand'.

Don't forget to mark the 23rd of December in your schedule. To the locals, this means one thing — Birthday of Emperor Akihito. A major day of festivities, this is a wonderful time to check out the country.

When it comes that time to say "Sayōnara" to Yahaba-cho, don't stress — it will always be there awaiting your next visit!

Security checks, delayed flights and long lines. Airports are often exhausting. Give yourself a bit of extra time to head to New Chitose Airport (CTS). Situated 360 kilometres to the north, it's the nearest terminal.
