Worst hotel I’ve ever stayed in
HORRIFIC! The kinder of the two employees I interacted with helped a lot and she was great, but the first woman I dealt with does not belong in hospitality. I arrived with two people in a room both only fitting one and set for one. It was also almost 30 degrees in there. This woman tried to convince me I was wrong about the room being set for one and refused to give me a fan when I asked. I found out the next day the hotel does have fans. So she knew we were in this attic closet of a room in a bed and space for one in high temperatures and offered no help as we stayed up through the night sweating and squeezing into a twin bed set for one. When I asked to cancel since they couldn’t offer a room to fit us she rudely said I’d be charged. No empathy. No solutions. What a horrible human being. That said, be warned, the “wispy” room means EXTREMELY small and room 41 is the size of a walk in closet with a small window that can only be slightly opened. The pillows are terrible and our bathroom sink was clogged. The bathroom door didn’t stay closed no matter what we did so you have to go and keep a hand or foot on it. The shower door is smaller than it should be so your bathroom will be soaked with each shower.

Great hotel near the station. Beautiful design and so close to the city too. Downstairs bar was lovely for a night cap and also for breakfast coffee and croissant.

The arrival / check in process is a chore... And there is no hotel staff to support arrivals or departures. The room itself, though small was clean, fresh air abundant and comfortable. The shower layout leaves something to be desired.

A true gem
The hotel is a boutique style and therefore it is fairly small and quiet. It is located very close to the central station and is extremely convenient to go around. The guests need to do self check in, which is quite straightforward. At the check in, Andras helped us with the settling in, even though he is not really a front desk boy. He is extremely helpful and super nice. He works at the cafe at the entrance to the hotel. In the morning, Oaryna, who is on her shift at the cafe gave us plenty of great tips. In a way the people at the cafe who may not be part of the hotel are the best gem of this hotel. About the room, it is very cozy and clean. The bed is very comfy. We got a attic room so we got slanted walls, but that’s what we wanted. Our room is certainly not as spacious as in some countries, but it should be noted that it is quite a nice sized Swiss hotel. I would like to add two suggestions that might make it cherry on top for this already great hotel. (1) The owner may consider adding either a curtain or door to fully close the shower area. No matter how carefully we showered, we got water splashing out since it is only a half closure. (2) Maybe the hotel could provide a “no cleaning or new towel” option such as a sign or something. That way, maybe it can be more eco friendly. Just a pointer US travelers. As per Swiss rule, the hotel could only keep the AC only at 24 Celsius at the lowest. So it can feel quite warm. But it is not the hotel’s fault.

Checked in on a kiosk. Never met anyone that worked at the hotel, the restaurant bartender had to help us check in. The air conditioning in our room did not work on the top floor (heat rises) so we opened windows. The hotel backs up to the train station. The room was extremely hot and loud. Was miserable after a long day of travel and jet lag. Additionally, assuming someone threw up in the elevator.. There were marks all over the floor and smelt absolutely disgusting. Like covered our noses and held our breath disgusting. The only positives were the actual room was nice. Comfortable bed and clean room. Was overall very disappointed.

Hotel Josef is a very decent hotel for a couple of days. The room size was fine; location was excellent being very close to the train/bus station; bed and bedding very very comfortable. Check in was clunky and only successful with the help of the kind guy at the coffee shop (attached to the hotel. Shower drain didn’t work so water overflowed onto the bathroom floor. Room furniture was uncomfortable, but was at least existed. Overall rating is satisfactory, given it was a short stopover.

Beautiful esthetic. Friendly staff at the bar downstairs who helped with check in. Really nice coffee and simple food offerings from the bar downstairs as well. Excellent location close to old town, the land museum and the main train station. Highly recommend!

It’s ridiculous that there’s only one self check in machine and the reception is in another hotel. The staff in the cafe is only equipped to help with basic check and directs all other operational matters to hotel Montana (where the reception is). I booked for 2 nights in 2 separate bookings which the machine and the cafe staff are unable to assist with. I then had to go to hotel Montana to explain this situation and the reception assured that there was no issues since I was allocated the same room. There was obviously an issue with the key card the next day and I was unable to enter my room. The new key card was given to the cafe staff which was unaware of the situation and had to call the reception for clarification. The check in procedure is extremely messy and badly managed. Additionally, I paid for a kitchenette, deluxe studio room (the largest / most expensive option) but there was no amenities to use the kitchenette - only a fridge and a coffee machine - no basic kitchen utensils nor spoon/ fork. Other than the location which is near Zurich HB, there are no pull factors of this hotel as the price is too steep for such a basic room that has no facilities.

Only one computer for self check in and there is a queue, not much privacy as other people can see the details you put in while checking in. Bedroom does not cater for tourist, no international electric sockets. On the other hand, luggage storage is available for the day even after check out and they have molton brown toiletries in the room.
