Holiday In Athens

Does planning your next getaway have you saying “It’s all Greek to me”? Take that as a hint and head to Athens! With a name like “The Cradle of Civilisation”, this city has a lot to live up to—and it does. Book an Athens holiday package and see what the land of feta, philosophy and Tommy Lee has to offer.

Things to Do in Athens

Of course you’ll visit the Acropolis on your Athens holiday, but if you partied a little too hard last night and just can’t make the trek yet, you can at least see it from the Plaka. The city’s oldest neighbourhood is filled with cobblestone streets and cafes where you can relax with a freddo cappuccino (or an ouzo, an anise-flavoured aperitif—we won’t judge). As the sun sets behind the Acropolis, find a rooftop with a view and you just might catch a far-away movie projected on an outdoor screen. It doesn’t get much better than that.

When you do head up the hill, you’ll find the most well-known destination for Greece holidays —and one of the most famous in the world. Walk around the imposing Parthenon and other buildings on the site and hear the stories of Greek gods and goddesses. The Erechtheion, for example, is where Athena and Poseidon fought to determine who would become the city’s patron. Obviously, Athena won. (Girl power.)

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

On Athens holidays, shopping is all about the neighbourhoods. In Kolonaki, “The SoHo of Athens”, you’ll find designer boutiques, art galleries and posh cafes filled mostly with locals. Monastiraki is the popular flea market district, where you can score knick-knacks and trinkets galore, plus pick up a great gift for mom: worry beads! She’ll wish she had them when you were in secondary school.

At Athens Central Market, fuel up with kasseropita (cheese pie) and semolina cake, and take home fresh baklava for the coworkers—everyone knows the best office souvenir is food! Adventurous eaters shouldn’t fear the 24-hour stalls. That ornery-looking old chef probably makes the best patsas soup around. Prefer your food well-lit and free of organ meat? You’re looking for Piraeus, the port district, which has a concert hall, amusement park and the freshest seafood around. Look into Athens car hire options on lastminute.com.au to really take yourself on a food tour.

When it comes time to party, ditch the personal wheels and hop in a cab to Psirri, just south of downtown. If your first thought is “I’m in the wrong place”, well, you’re in the right place. This industrial neighbourhood is home to surprising nightlife, from live bands to slick techno clubs. Holidays to Athens are sure to get you “pie” (drunk)—just get dropped off at Iroon Square and see where the night takes you.

"The food service was not great, apparently there was a problem preparing my food, but instead of communicating with us they brought my wife’s dinner out. She ate slowly but still finished her dinner before mine arrived. They should have asked what we wanted to do before bringing her dinner out."
