Holidays in Alerta

Tired of scrolling through other people's holiday pics while you're wolfing down your brekkie? Then book a trip to Alerta and start your days among the lush rainforest and rivers of Madre de Dios.

It lies 840 kilometres to the east of Lima, the capital city of Peru.

After some other nearby localities? Las Piedras is only 40 kilometres to the south, so jump in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Loyoboc, 85 kilometres south of Alerta, is also worth a day trip.

Feel like something a bit more involved? For a lively and memorable journey through the area's landscapes, sign up for some mountain biking or hiking.

When it comes to slowing down, nothing beats stepping outdoors and going shore fishing or bird watching.

Overwhelmed by things to do? Sometimes the best way to cram it all in is to hop aboard a couple of tours. The region boasts great guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

If you're looking to get outdoors and get wet, why not dive into one or two watersports like rafting or canoeing? All you need is some sun cream and a sense of adventure.

Pack your camera and head to one of the surrounding area's various outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are there to be explored.

Release the historian within by going to the local traditional villages and archeological sites. They're all excellent places to discover some secrets about the region's past.

To truly experience a place is to try its food and drink, so get set to gnaw, nibble, sip and swig your way through Madre de Dios. The only thing you need to take with you is your appetite!

A staple ingredient in the fare here is camu camu (Peruvian fruit). Another is chicken. They're worth getting a taste for if they're not already a part of your food repertoire.

No bona fide foodie would leave Alerta without sampling a few of the culinary specialties, such as patarashca (grilled fish) and ceviche (raw fish in lime juice).

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and that's no coincidence. There's no more delicious way to wave goodbye to your worries than with mazamorra morada and arroz con leche (purple corn custard and sweetened milk), a sweet treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

It's impossible to get the full travelling experience until you've knocked back the local brew. Whether you're looking to quench your thirst or get some liquid courage to make new friends, ask for Arequipeña.

Neat, mixed or in a fancy cocktail — it doesn't matter! A shot of Chicha de Jora (fermented corn-based alcoholic drink) will add some oomph to your evening! It's a favourite with locals, and it's definitely worth a try.

Start knocking down that pesky communication barrier by learning to say a few words and phrases in the local tongue. You'll gain a more satisfying experience and some new buddies while you're at it! '¿Cuánto cuesta? ' is how you say 'how much is this?'. 'Buenas noches' ('good evening') is another one you may need.

If you're considering travelling to Alerta in July, you'll want to be here on the 28th for Independence Day. There's always plenty of excitement leading up to this national day of festivities.

Like all good things, your time here will eventually come to an end. When it's finally time to depart, say one last "Adiós" and spend your leftover holiday allowance on some postcards to take home.

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), the closest airport, is just 350 kilometres to the southwest from the middle of Alerta. Map out a route, pack up your bag and set an alarm — and don't hit the snooze button too many times!
