Holidays in Asa

If that Chrissie money you got last year is burning a hole in your wallet, why not spend it on a break in Asa? We promise — it'll be the gift that keeps on giving!

It's situated 1,600 kilometres southwest of the nation's capital, Tokyo.

Put aside a few hours for relaxing on the shore and admiring ocean views at Mission Beach or Kise Beach.

You won't need to be stuck inside a car all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 45 kilometres out of Asa, Cape Zanpa is a wonderful place to get out into the fresh air. Even more tranquil surrounds are waiting for you at Tera Limestone Cave Park, 40 kilometres away.

Spend a free afternoon checking out the surroundings of the Zamami Port. If you've got time, Chishi Observatory is also well worth seeing.

If you're thinking about travelling further afield, journey 1 kilometre west to Zamami. It's here you'll come across the Tokashiki Port and Aharen Beach. We also suggest swinging by Aka, 7 kilometres to the southwest, for Aharen enchi Observatory and the Aka Ferry Terminal.

Naha is 35 kilometres away from Asa and is an important part of the local region. Nearby attractions include Shurijo Castle, Makishi Public Market and Naminoue Beach. Looking for more? The Tsuboya Pottery Museum and DFS Galleria Okinawa are also within easy reach.

Eating is one of life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your passion for both by going out and trying the local food and drink at some of the bars, cafés and restaurants across town.

Are you keen to know some of the most common ingredients used in the local kitchens? You're likely to be served beef and noodles in quite a few of your meals.

There's no need to dither over the menu while in Asa. Jump straight in and pick some of the regional specialties, such as tempura (deep fried seafood or vegetables) and hakata ramen (noodles in pork bone soup).

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't believe in coincidences. There's no more delicious way to let your hassles melt away than with anpan (sweet roll), a treat that's often found on dining tables here.

Is there anything more refreshing than sipping on an ice-cold glass of beer with a perfect foam head? Satiate your thirst and rub shoulders with a few of the locals over a round or two of Asahi Premium Beer Jukusen.

Junmaishu is the spirit of choice for many locals. Ask your bartender for a shot and get the party going!

Attempt to knock down the language barrier by learning to say a couple of words in the local tongue. You'll gain a more enriching experience and a few new friends while you're at it! 'Gomen nasai' may be very handy. It translates to 'sorry'. Another one to add to the memory bank is 'Yoi ichinichi o', meaning 'have a nice day'.

Delectable food, dancing and music — national celebrations show off the best of what a country has to offer. Make sure you join in with the locals on Birthday of Emperor Akihito on the 23rd of December.

When it comes time to say "Sayōnara" to Asa, don't stress — it will always be there awaiting your next visit!

When you're ready to fly back home, make sure you have extra time to head to Naha Airport (OKA). Sitting 35 kilometres to the east from the middle of Asa, this is the closest terminal.
