It's situated 130 kilometres to the northeast of Amsterdam, the nation's capital.

Swinging by Paterswolde, 15 kilometres to the north, is high on the list of many travellers. There's lots of things to keep you occupied here, including the Groninger Museum and Grote Markt.

Sitting 75 kilometres to the northwest, Nes Beach is a lovely place to spend a little time enjoying the sound of the waves. Hollum Beach also boasts some incredible views. You'll find it 80 kilometres to the northwest.

Break free on an adventure to some surrounding natural sights. 50 kilometres out of Assen, Lauwersmeer National Park is all yours to explore. National Park Drents-Friese Wold, 17 kilometres away, is another a popular place to kick back.

You'll learn about the culture and character of the surrounding area at the Drents Museum.

Take a journey back in time as you stroll around the Herinneringscentrum Kamp Westerbork. This historical site has plenty of tales to tell.

Nothing compares to the atmosphere of a live game of soccer! Watch the FC Groningen play on their home turf at Euroborg, 25 kilometres away in Groningen.

Do you like the sound of the Hunebed D17 and Kampsheide? These fantastic attractions are in Pittelo, just 2 kilometres northwest of Assen. Or maybe the Hunebed D13 and the Hunebed D12 are more up your alley? To visit them, go to Deurze, 4 kilometres to the southeast.

Approximately 15 kilometres to the east, Gasselte is a place with lots on offer. The Hunebed D20, the Hunebed D19 and the Hunebed D22 bij Bronneger are close by. That said, the Hunebed D21 and the Semslanden Golf may be more your thing.
