Holidays in Azua

Tossing and turning all night? Could be that intrepid spirit of yours! So what are you waiting for? Get up, dust off your passport and book a ticket to Azua!

It sits 85 kilometres west of Santo Domingo, the capital city of Dominican Republic.

San Rafael Beach and Guibia Beach are perfect options if you fancy somewhere to relax by the ocean.

Craving some one-on-one time with Mother Nature? Get in the car and hightail it to Aguas Blancas Waterfall, 45 kilometres from Azua. Alternatively, soak up some sunshine at Monumento Natural Dunas de las Calderas, 45 kilometres away.

Make sure you see the scenic surrounds of Parque 19 de Marzo. It's an excellent place to take full advantage of a pleasant day.

Like to venture outwards? Palmar de Ocoa is 20 kilometres to the southeast of Azua and San Jose de Ocoa is 25 kilometres to the east. Jump in the car and find out what's out there!

Located 50 kilometres to the north, Constanza is a place with something for everyone. Anacaona Park, La Nena Hill and Baiguate Salto Waterfall are close at hand. That said, Ebano Verde and Sanctuarío de la Virgen de Altagracia may be more your thing.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while visiting South Coast. Give your taste buds a little TLC too by sampling the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you haven't truly experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

Once you grab a seat and look over a menu at a restaurant, you'll soon realise that chicken and plantains are a few ingredients commonly used in the local cuisine.

Looking for a distinctive Azua eating experience? There are some specialty dishes to watch out for, such as la bandera (meat, beans and rice) and tostones (fried plantains).

Calories don't count when you're travelling, right? So it's a great excuse to acquaint yourself with the joys of dulce de coco (coconut milk dessert), a much-loved dessert.

You haven't lived until you've had a sip of the local brew. Whether you'd like to wet your whistle or get a bit of liquid courage to make new friends, order The One.

Cuba libre is the spirit of choice for many locals. Ask your bartender for a shot and get the party started!

Make an effort to connect with your hosts by memorising a couple of expressions in the local tongue. To get you started, try to get your tongue around 'Buenas noches'. It translates to 'good evening'. There's also '¡Cuánto tiempo!' ('long time no see').

Every year on the 27th of February, Independence Day holds an important place in the hearts and minds of the locals. It offers a wonderful chance to discover the nation's past and have a little fun while you're at it!

"Adiós" doesn't have to mean farewell forever. Why not save a few Dominican pesos for when you return?

If you'll be travelling via air, you'll probably be using Las Americas International Airport (SDQ). It's 110 kilometres to the east. Pack your bags, plan a route and set your alarm!
