Holidays in Ballyfin

If the Chrissie money you got last year is burning a hole in your wallet, why not spend it on a holiday to Ballyfin? We promise — it'll be a gift that keeps on giving!

It's located 85 kilometres southwest of Dublin, the capital of Ireland.

Be sure to pack a hamper of food and refreshing drinks so you can enjoy a relaxed bite by the water at Sandymount Beach or Brittas Bay Beach.

Mother Nature's splendour is on display in many places around Ballyfin. Just 40 kilometres away, Dunmore Cave is a great place to start. Hill of Allen sits 40 kilometres away and is another pleasant spot for some peace and quiet.

What could be more exciting than cheering until your voice is hoarse at a Gaelic football match? Watch the Laois GAA compete at O'Moore Park, located in Portlaoise, 9 kilometres away. Alternatively, experience the electric atmosphere of a live home game with the Laois GAA.

Venture further afield and see what's going on in Portlaoise, 8 kilometres to the east. Lots of visitors come here for the Rock of Dunamase and the Portlaoise Golf Club. Alternatively, Mountmellick is 9 kilometres to the northeast of Ballyfin. Head to this place for convenient access to Emo Court and the Mountmellick Museum.

Both travellers and locals often make the trip to Abbeyleix. This destination is 17 kilometres to the south and not far from the Abbeyleix Golf Club, Abbeyleix Heritage House and the Heywood Gardens. If you're staying a while, remember to stop by the Abbey Sense Gardens and the Sensory Gardens Dove House.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while visiting Laois. Give your taste buds a little attention as well by tucking into the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you can't say you've truly experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

Looking for a quick introduction to the regional cuisine? We suggest you get a taste for mutton and pork, two essential ingredients which make up a range of dishes here.

While Ballyfin offers plenty of culinary pleasures, don't miss Irish stew (lamb or mutton with potato, onion and parsley) and bacon and cabbage (pork back boiled with cabbage and potato). Considered local classics, you'll have to stick them on your must-eat list if you truly want to taste this destination.

You could be eating yourself into elastic-waisted trousers, but sweet seedcake loaf is certainly worth it. This favourite dessert will put your taste buds into overdrive just by looking at it.

To beer or not to beer? That is the question. Of course, the answer is always beer. While you're in this neck of the woods, Murphy’s Irish Stout is the one you want.

What better way to learn about a place than by joining in on a day of national celebration? There'll be many festivities planned for Saint Patrick's Day on the 17th of March.

Travelling to the charming Laois region is an enriching experience, and it's sure to have touched you with its magic. But alas, all holidays must come to an end.

Ballyfin's closest terminal is Dublin Airport (DUB). When you're ready to pack your bag and take to the skies, travel 90 kilometres to the northeast.
