HistoryFrench Polynesia was one of the last known places in the world to be settled by humans. It is thought that the first people on the islands were migrants from Asia who arrived in around 1500BC. Polynesian groups then began to occupy the islands, until the Europeans arrived in the 1500s. British, Spanish, and French explorers were among those to visit the islands and the French took control of some areas in the 1840s with the aim of converting them to Catholicism. Colonisation then occurred, and the French united all islands in 1889 and created a French protectorate. In the late 1940s people living on the islands were given French nationality and French Polynesia was classed as an overseas territory. Later years saw the islands being greater self-autonomy.
