First room they assigned us was like a jail cell. We asked for a better room and they gave us a nice room. The second day they asked us to move to the Savoia next door and that was a much superior hotel.

When we checked in our room was still dirty and we had to go back to reception. They moved us next door with an upgrade but still very inconvenient. The staff was nice but not overly helpful.

We were “upgraded” to the Hotel Grand Savoia which from reading reviews of the Continental happens a fair amount. I did not stay at the Continental but, they are sister properties under the same ownership. The check in desk was highly professional. The concierge had a scowl on her face and left at 5PM making a dinner reservation with informed choice impossible. The hotel calls itself a 5 star, It is definitely not that. I have stayed at true 5 star hotels and that is an experience that is not soon forgotten. I would never again stay at the Grand Hotel Savoia as the overall experience is one of a Grand Hotel built in 1897 and while I am certain that was a 5 star experience, the hotel has seen better days and is a 3 star at best. Do be cautious in the area at night.

PROS: Spacious room, good bed, spotlessly clean, big tv, hearty breakfast, excellent a/c, 3 minute walk of main train station. CONS: Tiny shower, minuscule elevator, not the best zone in town, a bit pricey. Overall, an A minus.

This is not a 5 star hotel—I have stayed at 5 star hotels across the globe and the thing that always stands out at those properties is the staff and service. The staff, especially at the front desk are not interested in providing excellent service. I’ve had friendlier experiences at Chick Fil A!
