Holidays in Hakata

Food is great, wine is even better, but travel really hits the spot! So isn’t it about time you sunk your teeth into the unique Fukuoka neighbourhood of Hakata? You'll be sharing the city's streets with around 1,400,000 locals. Make an effort to meet a few of them! From the city centre, Hakata is located 4 kilometres to the southeast. You'll most likely be coming in via Fukuoka Airport (FUK), so after you've picked up your bags you'll need to make tracks 0.7 kilometres to the south.

Hakata is a sightseer's dream. Many of the city's attractions are sprinkled near this appealing neighbourhood, including Ohori Park and the Tochoji Temple. After taking a look at those, you're going to want to head onwards to Fukuoka Tower and the Fukuoka Art Museum. For a new perspective on the city, organise a day at Morooka and Itazuke, nearby neighbourhoods that are definitely worth a peek.

The centre of the city also features a range of excellent sights to feast your eyes on, such as the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Kushida Shrine. Alternatively, have a look around the Fukuoka City Museum and the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum.

Gain a better understanding of the local culture at the Artium Art Gallery and the Hakata Traditional Craft Center.

From interactive displays to curious objects and artefacts, there's something for everyone at museums. If you get caught off guard by a rainy day, why not take yourself over to the Hakata Food and Culture Museum, the Kyushu Energy Museum, Youth Science and Culture Center and Korokanatotenjikan?

Nothing beats the atmosphere of excitement when a live performance is about to kick off. Take your seat and wait for the curtains to go up at Acros Fukuoka Symphony Hall and the Hakataza Theatre.

Kids are often great travel buddies, especially if you take them to the right attractions! For a memorable family day out, head to the Fukuoka Library, the Anpanman Children's Museum and Seaside Momochi.

If you're a traveller who loves spending time outdoors, stop in at the Rakusuien Gardens, the Yusentei Park and Kumanokawa Onsen.

Whether you're hoping to recharge your batteries a little bit or play a game of Frisbee with your friends, the nearby green spaces are delightful places to be. Your options include Higashi Koen, Maizuru Park, Kaizukakotsu Park and Chuo Park.

An excellent way to remember your holiday is by taking home a memento or two. See what's on offer at Canal City Hakata, Fukuoka Mitsukoshi Department Store, Tenjin Core and Hakata Riverain.

Head over for an educational history lesson at Fukuoka Castle, the Genko Historical Museum, the Fukuoka Akarenga Cultural Center and Kihinkan Public Hall. Reading about them in a book just doesn't compare!

Find out more about the region's spiritual dimensions at Sumiyoshi Shrine, the Shofukuji Temple, Kego Shrine and Terumo Shrine. These sites are worth checking out whether you're a religious person or not.
