Holidays in Iza

Been burning the candle at both ends? Desperate for a break and a few early nights? Iza might just be the answer. It's set among the rural landscapes of Boyaca — nice and off the beaten track. (We bet you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the blankets by sunset!)

Colombia's capital city, Bogota, can be found 160 kilometres to the southwest of Iza.

If you can't imagine a holiday without a little sports action, check what events are scheduled at Bullring. It's likely something will be happening while you visit. You can find the venue 45 kilometres away in Tunja.

Expand your horizons and see what's going on in Sogamoso, 11 kilometres to the northeast. Lots of travellers come here for the Archaeological Museum and Plaza de Toros La Pradera. Alternatively, Tibasosa is 15 kilometres to the north of Iza. Head to this destination for convenient access to Innovo Plaza Duitama and the Lancers Monument.

Both tourists and locals often head over to Villa de Leyva. This destination is 60 kilometres away and not far from Pozos Azules, Villa de Leyva Plaza Major and the Zoocriadero Ostrich Farm. If you're planning to stay a little while, don't miss the Paleontological Research Center and the 1900 Theme Park.

Indulge the adventurer within and delight in the region's landscapes with a bit of rock climbing. Or, why not try out mountain climbing?

Shore fishing and picnicking are enjoyable ways to take some time out if all that sightseeing has left you feeling a little fatigued.

Are you into spending time by the water? Add some extra excitement to your trip with a bit of swimming or canoeing.

The region's art museums and history museums offer something for all travellers. Step inside and check out what's happening.

Pull on your walking shoes and make your way over to one of the surrounding area's lovely outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are ready and waiting to be explored.

The region has a rich background. Spend a bit of time exploring the nearby old towns. Don't worry if you can't find much information available online — the locals are likely to have some stories to share!

Learn all about the area's spiritual beliefs by organising an outing to its churches and cathedrals. Pause for your own quiet contemplation or simply observe the locals in prayer.

There's a world of fresh flavours waiting to say hello to your taste buds in Boyaca. With plenty of decadent things to gorge on, all you need to take along is a good appetite — and perhaps your stretchiest denims.

Do you like rice? What about potato? Whether you're into them or not, they are two traditional ingredients regularly used in the cuisine here.

Don't pass up the chance to try tomales tolimenses or ajiaco (chicken and vegetable soup). These much-loved dishes come highly recommended by the locals.

If you really want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to knock back a beer. Schooner rather than later! Terrible beer puns aside, don't forget to try out Pilsen, one of the most well-known local brews.

There's a cellar full of reasons to try Casa Grajales white or Casa Grajales red. These tasty drops beckon wine connoisseurs from far and wide.

Before you pack up your belongings and say "Adiós", why not spend the last bits of your holiday allowance and treat yourself to some mementos of Iza?

If you're travelling via air, it's a wise idea to decide a route to the terminal beforehand. From the centre of Iza, it's about 170 kilometres southwest to El Dorado International Airport (BOG), the closest airport.
