Holidays in La Corte

Cool! Your leave's been approved. Now all you need to do is say goodbye to the daily grind for a while and book a ticket to La Corte — pronto!

It lies 390 kilometres southwest of the capital of Spain, Madrid.

Keep your eyes peeled for shiny shells to add to your collection or try to spot creatures like seabirds and crabs at Monte Gordo Beach and Matalascanas Beach. You'll find these popular strips of coastline 100 kilometres and 100 kilometres away, respectively.

Mother Nature's artwork is yours to discover in numerous places around La Corte. Just 16 kilometres away, Cave of Marvels is a great place to start. La Gruta de las Maravillas sits 15 kilometres away and is another favourite spot for some peace and quiet.

Santa Ana la Real, 2 kilometres to the southeast, is known for the Almonaster La Real Mosque and Pena de Arias Monument. Why not make your way there and check out these popular sights? Alternatively, go to Jabugo, 6 kilometres to the north of La Corte, for Cortegana Castle and Chapel of the Queen of Angels.

Planning to head to Zafra? This place is just 70 kilometres to the north. If you're setting up camp here, make sure you check out Plaza Grande, the Bodega Medina and Zafra Castle. Also consider taking a peek at Church of the Candelaria and Town Hall.

Whether you prefer chasing Michelin stars or chowing down on a simple street snack, sampling the local food and drink is one of the best things about travel. So why not tingle your taste buds by trying some of the region's mouthwatering offerings?

If you're poring over a menu, there's every chance you'll come across meals with custard apple or ham. They're some ingredients which are often used in the fare here.

No true culinary adventurer would leave La Corte without tucking into a few of the local specialties, such as flamenquín (fried bacon wrapped pork loin) and ajoblanco (bread, almond and garlic soup).

A meal is never truly complete without dessert, so give up calorie counting for a while and get stuck into one of the most well-known sweet treats, alfajor (flour and hazelnut sweet).

More experienced travellers tend to put in some effort to memorise a couple of words in the local tongue. You'll find that being able to exchange some words with the local people isn't just useful, it's good fun too! Firstly, try to pronounce '¡Salud!'. It translates to 'cheers/good health!'. One more to remember is '¡Feliz cumpleaños!', meaning 'happy birthday'.

Every year on the 12th of October, National Day occupies an important place in the locals' hearts and minds. It offers a unique opportunity to learn about the nation's history and have some fun while you're at it!

Before you pack up and wave "Adiós", why not spend the last of your holiday allowance and buy yourself some souvenirs of La Corte?

With some planning, getting to Faro International Airport (FAO), the nearest airport, shouldn't be too much trouble. It's approximately 140 kilometres to the southwest of downtown La Corte.

If you're hunting for a cosy room without all the bells and whistles, the La Posada de San Marcos, located at Colon, 12, is your safest bet. One more place that provides superb service at a low price is the Aparthotel Rural 12 Caños, which you'll find at Calle De La Cultura 21.
