Holidays in La Reina
Yep. Wanderlust — it gets right into your bones. So, isn't it high time you planned your next adventure? La Reina awaits!
The renowned city of Tegucigalpa is within reach of La Reina. You will find this busy centre 200 kilometres to the northwest.
You won't have to be stuck in a car all day to see some nature around these parts. Just 12 kilometres out of La Reina, Cerro Apante Natural Reserve is a favourite spot to get a breath of fresh air. Even more tranquil surrounds are waiting for you at El Jaguar, 45 kilometres away.
You'll discover even more just down the road. San Ramon, 6 kilometres to the west, is known for the Guanuca Cultural Center and Molaguina Church. Alternatively, if San Jose Church and Cathedral San Pedro are more your thing, head 17 kilometres west from La Reina to Matagalpa.
Spend an afternoon visiting Cerro Tepeyac Sanctuary, San Rafael Arcangel Parish and Santuario Cerro Tepeyac. These attractions are all close to the centre of San Rafael del Norte, 50 kilometres to the northwest. Have more time on your hands? Templo Parroquial de San Rafael Arcángel and Museo Sandino should also be on your to-do list.
'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once said, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to unite your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Matagalpa.
If you're studying a menu, there's a good chance you'll see meals featuring beans or salad. They're some ingredients which are typically used in the cooking here.
Of course, you can't head home from La Reina without tucking into vigorón (cabbage salad) or tortillas. Popular with the locals and considered regional specialties, they are an essential experience for any food-loving traveller.
Pio quinto (rum-drenched cake) is a dessert that tells the story of this place in just one bite. Put in an order for a serving and then get another one to go!
Good news, beer freaks. You'll be able to find some flavoursome bews to throw back here. Enjoy a glass or two of Premium in a nice bar and be sure to text your loved ones back at home, 'Wish you were beer'.
Vodka is what most locals have when the evening calls for something a touch stronger. Ask the bartender for a tiny taste and see if it fits the bill.
Don't let the language barrier get in the way of a good time! Make your adventure to Matagalpa a more fulfilling one by putting in the effort to memorise a few expressions in the local tongue. '¿Cuánto cuesta? ' may be very handy. It's how you say 'how much is this?'. Maybe you'll find 'No comprendo' is a bit easier to roll off the tongue? It means 'I don't understand'.
Delicious food, dancing and music — national celebrations show off the best of what a country has to offer. Ensure you join in with the locals on Independence Day on the 15th of September.
It's always difficult to say "Hasta la vista" to La Reina, but you can always come back!
Located 360 kilometres to the west is El Salvador International Airport (SAL), the closest terminal. Make sure you have plenty of time to find it.
Hotels in La Reina
You won't find much when it comes to accommodation in La Reina itself. If you don't mind travelling a bit further out, there are a couple of places available in the surrounding area. Your best bet will be the Hotel Roca de la Cumbre, about 8 kilometres away in San Ramon.Top hotels for your La Reina holiday
