Holidays in Lake St. Clair

Yep. Midlands is kinda off the beaten track. But hey, who wants to follow the tourist trail anyway? Besides, there's stacks to see in this amazing region (not least of all its unmissable rural landscapes, lakes and mountains). Base yourself in Lake St. Clair and you can check it all out from there.

It lies 790 kilometres to the south of the country's capital, Canberra.

Feel like enjoying a picnic and relaxing by the water? Sulpher Creek Beach is 100 kilometres from Lake St. Clair. Sitting 55 kilometres away, Beaches is another inviting choice.

Mother Nature's artwork is yours to explore in multiple places around Lake St. Clair. Just 35 kilometres away, Dove Lake is an excellent place to start. Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre sits 40 kilometres away and is another popular spot for a bit of downtime.

The best snow is always in the morning, so you'll want to set your alarm clock early the night before travelling to Mount Mawson.

Derwent Bridge is 30 kilometres to the southeast and worth going to. After more ideas? Cradle Mountain, 30 kilometres to the north of Lake St. Clair, should be your second stop.

Sitting 55 kilometres to the west, Strahan is a destination with lots to offer. The Strahan Golf Club, Strahan Harbour and Botanical Garden Reserve are close by. Keep in mind, Hogarth Falls and the West Coast Reflections may be more your thing.

Release the adventurer within and discover the surrounding landscape with some mountain climbing. Or, perhaps you'd rather go hiking?

A clear day is a fantastic opportunity to head into the great outdoors and spend a lazy afternoon camping. If the agreeable weather lasts, you could also enjoy some wildlife watching.

Spend a bit of time indoors wandering around the hidden treasures of the region's history museums and craft workshops.

It's hard to think of a more interesting way to explore the surrounding area than by visiting its open-air markets.

If you're hoping to find out something new about the region's background, visit some traditional villages and historic bridges. Dig out your map, do a bit of research and check out the most popular ones.

Your eyes shouldn't get to have all the fun while you're in Midlands. Give your taste buds a little love as well by trying out some of the local food and drink. After all, you haven't truly experienced a destination until you've tasted its flavours.

Beef and salmon are just a couple of typical ingredients in many dishes here. If you don't have a thing for them already, you might by the end of your holiday!

Don't miss the chance to sample salt and pepper squid or meat pie. These classic meals are highly recommended by the locals.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't believe in coincidences. There's no tastier way to let your cares melt away than with peach melba, a treat often found on dining tables here.

Feeling thirsty? Throw back a glass or two of Cascade Special Stout, a beer that should be on your bucket (or pint) list.

If the evening calls for something a bit more potent, try Bundaberg Spiced Rum. On the rocks or in a cocktail — the bartender ought to know the best way to have it.

Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon and Huon Valley Pinot Noir are perfect partners to almost any dish. You don't have to be a wine lover to recognise a nice drop!

Time to bid farewell to the beautiful Midlands region? You might only have a handful of Australian dollars remaining in your pocket, but you'll be rich in unforgettable experiences.

Ready to hit the tarmac? Pack up your bags, set the alarm clock and map out a route to Tullamarine Airport (MEL). It's roughly 490 kilometres to the north.
