On this website this hotel is a PET FRIENDLY property. We booked a Pet Friendly room but upon arrival were told the room we booked was not pet friendly. They wanted us to move to a much smaller room which we refused to do. They then told us that we would not be allowed in the dining or bar area with our puppy and if we wanted to order anything we would have to stay in our room and order room service. To get to this property you have to drive through an unsavoury area, we could not risk driving to a dinner venue in the dark unsafe roads. So our stay consisted of sitting in our room with no view as the walls are too high to see over. Needless to stay we left after 1 night instead of staying the weekend. It was a week to celebrate my recovery from breast cancer so very disappointing.
The only positive was that the reception staff were very helpful, apologetic and kind. The management were awful, they did not bother to even greet us and we also overheard them complaining about us that we had a dog.

Perfect family Getaway
I really enjoy the Lodge. Perfect for Self catering and they really pay attention to the little details. Home made delicious biscuits every night, setting up the fire and making sure the chalet is warm for your return. They also supply you with firewood and we were gifted an amazing bottle of wine when we left. The staff are friendly and accommodating. We will definitely return
We have had an amazing stay at Lythwood Lodge, staying in a self catering unit for my birthday celebrations.
What an amazing time was had by all, the unit was beautiful, clean and had everything you would need for a weekend away. The special treat was the turndown service every night making it so special walking in from dinner to warm rooms and bathrooms and a little treat on the dining table!
Breakfast and dinner was absolutely amazing and so well worth it. The dinner menu is changed daily and the menu has something for everyone.
We will definitely be back, thank you to the Lythwood Lodge team for your amazing service, the staff all around are super friendly and so helpful making the stay all the more enjoyable.
* Thank you for the birthday dessert which was a special touch!
This was a fantastic hotel with great staff, excellent food, at a brilliant price. It’s a bit off the beaten track but this adds to its charm and is in a beautiful location. Definitely need a car.
We stayed just one night with another couple, booking into a two-bedroom cottage. The room was excellent, with each bedroom having its own relatively modern en-suite. The common kitchen and lounge area was spacious and the free tea, coffee, milk and wood for the internal fire (and external braai area) were nice touches.
The staff were extremely friendly and we will most definitely be back during the summer months!
Excellent hospitality and hideout in the Midlands....a bit of a drive on gravel road, high clearance vehicle advisable

Nice but a little disappointing for a 4*
Had a very relaxing stay. Hotel was great, views were beautiful, staff were very friendly and the food was amazing. We were a bit disappointed with our room though as I have a baby and couldn't bath her as there was no running cold water in the bath so had to use the basin. There was a foul smell from the shower drain every time we showered. The toilet had a permanent urine smell. And there were no fans in the scorching December heat and a lot of flies. We also had a couple of drinks put on our bill that wasn't ours but because we were in a hurry we ended up just paying for it. Other than the few disappointments everything else was great!
Very nice and quiet setting. Well equipped self-catering unit. Nice features for keeping warm during cooler winter months: electric blankets, fire place & heaters. Comfortable mattress. Lots to do in the area: amazing pottery down the road, many crafters to visit, nice cheeses and craft beers, great farmers market on a Saturday in Howick.
