Holidays in Marqu

Adventure. Relaxation. Adventure. Relaxation. Off to Marqu but can't decide what kinda holiday you want? Don't get in a tizz! We'll help sort it out.

It lies 2,600 kilometres to the southwest of the nation's capital, Beijing.

Are you craving a day out in nature? Commandeer a set of wheels and hightail it to Lhalu Wetland National Nature Reserve, 40 kilometres from Marqu. Alternatively, take in a breath of fresh air at Qizi Peak, 40 kilometres away.

Are you a sports buff? Then investigate the event schedule at Tibet Stadium, located 40 kilometres to the southeast in Lhasa.

Doilungdeqen County is 35 kilometres to the southeast and worth your time. After even more ideas? Lhasa, 40 kilometres to the northeast of Marqu, should be on your list.

Mountain climbing and hiking are both very popular with the locals. These pastimes will allow you to experience this incredible region from a totally different viewpoint.

Sky diving challenges you to reach new heights. Breathe in deep and head for the clouds for the thrill of your life!

Looking for a bit of fun on the water? Then put on your suntan lotion and dive into some rafting or canoeing.

Our travel schedules are often dependent on the weather forecast, but thankfully that isn't the case with every attraction. Rain, hail or shine, see the region's palaces any time you like.

If you'd like to learn about the local systems of belief, stop at some temples and monasteries. Even if you don't have a spiritual awakening, it's likely that you'll find a little tranquillity.

Bank cards? Check. ID? Check. But have you packed your appetite? With some fine food and drink to devour across this region, it's the one thing you shouldn't leave at home.

Ask one of the locals what they recommend eating and tingmo (steamed bun) will likely be the first thing that rolls off their tongue. Thenthuk (noodle soup) is another of the area's signature dishes you'll want to try.

Ask any seasoned traveller and they'll tell you that the easiest way to get the most from your travel experience is to learn a handful of the local words and phrases. Firstly, have a go at saying 'Wǎnān'. It means 'good evening'. Another one to keep in mind is 'Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nǐ', meaning 'pleased to meet you'.

Thankfully Marqu isn't going anywhere, so this "Zàijiàn" doesn't need to be your last!

Gonggar Airport (LXA), the closest airport, is some 65 kilometres to the south from the middle of Marqu. Map out a route, pack up your suitcase and set an alarm — and be sure not to hit the snooze button too many times!
