The coast is well-known for its art galleries and workshops, so make sure you take a browse before hitting up the Matakana Village Farmers' Market and the Matakana Country Park Family Market, which are both held on Saturday mornings. Alternatively, you can visit the Puhoi Farmers Market on the last Sunday of the month.

When you need a bite to eat, you can feast on fresh seafood and gourmet goodies in a casual eatery or a fine dining restaurant – there's something here for all palates and budgets. There's also a wicked gelataria and chocolaterie and you'll find the perfect drop to pair with your choccy if you embark on the Matakana Wine Trail.

The Auckland Airport is only an hour away, so grab one of these cheap flights to Auckland. There are some buses that run between Auckland and the Matakana Coast but not all areas are well-serviced, so you're best off hiring a car if you really want to explore the region.
