Holidays in Mayberry

Cool! You've had your leave approved. Now all that's left to do is say goodbye to the daily grind for a while and book your ticket to Mayberry — ASAP!

It's located 740 kilometres to the south of Canberra, the nation's capital.

Comb the shore for shells to add to your collection at home or try to spot creatures like crabs and sea stars at Bakers Beach and Somerset Beach. You'll find these attractive stretches of coastline 50 kilometres and 70 kilometres away, respectively.

The calming sounds of nature await you at Dove Lake. It sits just 30 kilometres away, so you won't need to be stuck on the road all day. Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre, 30 kilometres away, is one more recommended option.

If you've got some spare time to spend, see what you can discover at Mole Creek Caves.

The Trowunna Wildlife Park and Marakoopa Cave are not far from the middle of Mole Creek, 4 kilometres to the east. Need more? Liena, 8 kilometres to the west of Mayberry, has King Solomons Cave and Westmorland Falls.

Feel like going to the Deloraine and Districts Folk Museum, the Three Willows Vineyard and Great Western Tiers Visitor Centre? Make tracks to Deloraine, 30 kilometres to the east, and set up base. These attractions, as well as St. Marks Church and the Yarns Artwork in Silk, are all close.

Pander to the adventurer within and delight in the surrounding landscape with a day of rock climbing. Or, perhaps you'd rather go mountain climbing?

Leave the organising to your guide as you mingle with other travellers on guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

Are you keen on spending time by the water? Add some extra excitement to your holiday by going rafting or canoeing.

If you ask some locals about activities in the surrounding area, they'll often point to the intriguing open-air museums.

Your eyes shouldn't have all the fun while you're in Tasmania. Give your taste buds a little lovin' too by trying the local food and beverage offerings. After all, you haven't truly experienced a place until you've tasted its flavours.

Beef and salmon are some popular ingredients found in many dishes here. If you don't have a love for them already, you will by the end of your getaway!

No true foodie would visit Mayberry without tasting one or two of the local specialties, such as salt and pepper squid and meat pie.

If a life without dessert doesn't seem like a life worth living, you should definitely acquaint yourself with peach melba. This sweet treat represents the area in just one mouthful.

If you truly want to see the big pitcher, take the hopportunity to sip on a beer. Schooner rather than later! Awful beer puns aside, make sure you order Cascade Special Stout, one of the best local brews.

Bundaberg Spiced Rum is what most locals have when the evening calls for something with a bigger kick. Ask the bar person for a tiny taste and enjoy the warm glow.

There's a wine barrel full of reasons why you should sample Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon or Huon Valley Pinot Noir. These tasty drops draw vino savants from far and wide.

Having difficulty saying goodbye? Don't worry. This gorgeous region will always be here to welcome you back.

When it's time to pack up your suitcase and hit the tarmac, the nearest terminal, Tullamarine Airport (MEL), is 450 kilometres to the north.
