Holidays in Montserrat

Quit your job, book a ticket, get a tan, fall in love, never come back. You don't have to do all of those things, but one you should do is lock in that ticket to Montserrat. One of the many 'hoods of Buenos Aires, it's a fantastic base for discovering everything this city has to offer. The capital of Argentina is home to some 13,100,000 people and the perfect place to learn about the nation's history and culture. Montserrat is 0.8 kilometres southeast of central Buenos Aires. If you're arriving in Ministro Pistarini International Airport, toss your luggage in the back of a taxi and journey 25 kilometres northeast.

Montserrat is heaven for sightseers. A good number of the city's best attractions are sprinkled near this neighbourhood, including Teatro Colon and Casa Rosada. Don't forget to put the Obelisk and Plaza del Mayo on your list as well. While you're here, consider visiting a few other neighbourhoods to experience more of what Buenos Aires offers. 9 de Julio Avenue and Capital Federal District are some great areas that are close by.

If somehow you were unaware of the University of Buenos Aires, prepare to be awestruck. This well-known attraction is located just 10 kilometres northwest of Montserrat.

There are a million and one reasons why so many visitors head straight to the city centre. The Cabildo and Argentine National Congress are just a couple of them. Alternatively, have a look around Plaza San Martin and Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral.

Looking to blow off some steam? Exciting stops include the Naval Center, the Argentine Cinema Museum, Cafe de los Angelitos and the Puerto Madero Casino.

Head to a few cultural places to gain a deeper understanding of the region. The Recoleta Cultural Center, the Borges Cultural Center, the Alvear Art Gallery and the Braga Menendez Contemporary Art shouldn't be missed.

If you've got a taste for the arts, plan a visit to the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires, the Fundacion Proa, the Xul Solar Museum and the Museo Nacional De Arte Decorativo. Walk around and if one of the works speaks volumes to you, ask the staff for information about its creator.

If you luck out and get stuck with nasty weather, take refuge in the Presidente Sarmiento Frigate Ship Museum, the Police Museum, the Museo Casa Carlos Gardel and the Uruguay Ship Museum. The marvellous displays are sure to keep your mind active and your body dry!

There's nothing like that feeling of anticipation when a show is about to start. Take your seat and watch the curtains rise at the Teatro Ciego, Usina del Arte, the Gran Rex Theatre and the Teatro Nacional Cervantes.

Children can be great travel mates, particularly if you take them to awesome places! For some quality family time, visit the National Library, the Museo de los Ninos and the Museo Historico de Cera.

On a bright and sunny day, get into the fresh air and immerse yourself in the beauty of nature at the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, Buenos Aires Outdoors and the El Rosedal Park.

Give your legs a workout at the Carlos Thays Botanic Garden, Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur and Bosques de Palermo. A long trek through any of these green reserves will recharge your spirits.

Get your picnic on and invite some friends down to have a laugh in one of the vibrant green spaces nearby. Your options include Plaza de los Dos Congresos, San Martin Square, Lezama Park and Parque Las Heras.

Quite often, the easiest way to get to know a new place is by hanging out at the shops. Be sure to call in to Galerias Pacifico, Patio Bullrich, Recoleta Mall and Alto Palermo Shopping Center.

Learn some lessons from the past at a couple of the area's historic sites, such as Torre de los Ingleses, the Banco de la Nacion Argentina, Serrano Square and Plaza Dorrego.

Find out about the region's spiritual aspects at Anglican Cathedral, Basilica de Nuestra Senora de la Merced, the King Fahd Islamic Cultural Center and N. S. Pilar Parish. These sites are worth checking out whether you're a religious person or not.

It's time to practise your Mexican wave technique and limber up your vocal chords. Come and cheer on the home teams, the River Plate and Argentina National Football Team, at Estadio Monumental.
