Holidays in Mucojo

Forgetting to turn up to your performance review is a sure-fire sign that you need a break. So why not step off the beaten track to Mucojo and explore the appealing beaches of Mozambique? (The only thing you'll have to remember is how to chillax!)

It's located 1,750 kilometres northeast of Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique.

Does picnicking by the sea tickle your fancy? Then take the opportunity to visit Pemba Beach, 100 kilometres to the south.

You should always know where your closest natural escape is. Here, it's Quirimbas National Park, 40 kilometres out of Mucojo.

Don't be alarmed if you find a number of fellow tourists at Quirimbas National Park.

If you've got plenty of time, why not go to a few nearby destinations? Matemo Island and Medjumbe Island are 19 kilometres and 30 kilometres away, respectively.

An invigorating way to experience the greater region is to embark on an outdoor adventure. Hiking is one of the most popular pastimes around here. But if that's not your thing, you could always go quad biking.

Looking for some fun off dry land? Mozambique is a fantastic place to dive into some swimming and snorkeling. They're must-do pastimes, even for landlubbers!

You don't need to be a believer to enjoy Mucojo's cathedrals. Get to know local belief systems and find some serenity while you're at it.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your love for both by going out and trying the food and drink offerings at a few of the restaurants, cafés and bars across town.

Once you grab a seat and scan a restaurant or café menu, you'll quickly realise that banana and coconut milk are a few ingredients commonly used in the local cuisine.

When the locals talk to you about their food, you might hear pao (bread rolls) or peri peri chicken mentioned once or twice. These classic meals are part of the region's identity and should be on any foodie's list.

Ananás com gengibre (pineapple with ginger) is a dessert that summarises this place in just one mouthful. Put in an order for a serving and see how long it takes you to come back for more!

For lovers of a satisfying pint, hunt down a cosy bar and request Manica. Enjoy it with a side of joke-cracking and socialising with the locals.

Your experience in Mucojo will definitely be much more satisfying if you make the effort to master a couple of the local phrases and expressions. To start with, try to get your tongue around 'Olá'. It means 'hello'. Perhaps you'll find 'Feliz aniversário!' easier to say? This means 'happy birthday'.

Celebrated throughout the country, Independence Day takes place on the 25th of September. If you're lucky enough to be here on this important day, it'll be difficult not to get swept up in the festivities!

Before you say "Até logo" to Mucojo, check your pockets for any remaining change that you can spend on last-minute memorabilia.

If you're catching a plane home, it's probably wise to map out your route to the terminal before leaving. From the middle of Mucojo, you'll need to go some 100 kilometres south to Pemba Airport (POL), the nearest airport.
