Holidays in Mukshi

Been burning the candle at both ends? Dying for a break and a few quiet nights? Mukshi has your name all over it. It's set among the forests, rivers, streams and lakes of Udmurt Republic — nice and not too touristy. (We reckon you'll feel so relaxed, you'll be under the doona by sunset!)

The nation's capital, Moscow, sits around 980 kilometres to the west of Mukshi.

Whether you're planning to spend the day on the expert runs or find your feet on the beginners' slope, you'll love the soft, fluffy snow at SK Chekeril.

After some other nearby places? Kutonshur is only 3 kilometres to the east, so get in the car and start exploring! Alternatively, Malyye Oshvortsy, 6 kilometres west of Mukshi, is also worth the time.

Spend some time exploring the Kalashnikov Museum, the Zoo Udmurtia and State Opera and Ballet Theater. All of these attractions are quite close to the middle of Bummash, 40 kilometres away. Looking for more? The Udmurtia Museum of Fine Arts and the Young Man Municipal Youth Theater should also feature on your itinerary.

See the region from a different angle and sign up for a bit of mountain climbing or hiking. They're both well-loved pastimes in this corner of the globe.

Whether you're plunging headfirst into it, drifting on it or bouncing along its surface, not much beats spending the day by the water. You can get involved in a number of watersports here, including swimming and boating.

Get a slice of the winter action by trying skiing. If you're not ready to hang up your coat and hat, also have a crack at cross-country skiing.

Step into the region's art museums, history museums, art galleries and theaters and soak up all that they have to offer.

If the weather outside is looking good, why not hit the road and investigate the surrounding area's gardens?

If you'd like to educate yourself about the region's past, plan an outing to a few old towns. Grab a map, do a bit of research and check out the most popular ones.

Want to add some deeper meaning to your getaway? Whether you're after a spiritual experience or just interested in learning about the local religious traditions, swing by some of the surrounding churches, cathedrals, mosques and temples.

Eating is among life's greatest pleasures, and since you're reading this, you probably think travel is too. Combine your passion for both by heading out and sampling the local food and beverage offerings at a handful of the restaurants, cafés and bars across town.

A standard meal here tends to include rye and horseradish, two of the staple ingredients for which the region is known for plating up.

'Stressed' spelled backwards is 'desserts', and we don't think that's a coincidence. There's no more delicious way to say goodbye to your worries than with çäkçäk (honey covered pastry balls), a sweet treat that's often found on dinner tables here.

They say life's not all beer and skittles, but there's nothing wrong with indulging in a cold one on occasion. While you're in this neck of the woods, make sure it's Baltika Premium Lager.

Start knocking down that old language barrier by memorising a few words and phrases in the local tongue. You'll gain a more fulfilling experience and a few new friends while you're at it! You'll be glad you learnt 'Ja iz ...', which translates as 'I am from..'. One more often used phrase is 'Dobryj večer!' ('good evening').

Be sure to put the 12th of June in your schedule. To the locals, this means one thing — Russia Day. A prominent day of celebrations, this is a marvellous time of year to check out the country.

Luckily Mukshi isn't going anywhere, so this "Poka!" doesn't have to be your last!

With some planning, making your way to Kazan International Airport (KZN), the nearest airport, won't be too much trouble. It's around 310 kilometres to the southwest of downtown Mukshi.
