Holidays in Sematan

Keen to get away from it all? Can't stop scrolling through hashtags like #BeautifulDestinations? Then base yourself in Sematan and take a journey through the breathtaking forests and jungle of Sarawak.

Malaysia's capital city, Kuala Lumpur, is situated roughly 910 kilometres to the west of Sematan.

Perhaps you'll come across washed up treasures while enjoying a stroll along the shore at Damai Beach.

There is a variety of lovely natural sights around Sematan. Why not travel 45 kilometres to Kubah National Park? Alternatively, immerse yourself in some of nature's finest artwork at Gunung Gading National Park, 12 kilometres away.

Want to venture outwards a little? Lundu is 15 kilometres to the southeast of Sematan and Sambas is 80 kilometres to the southwest. Get in the car and find out what's out there!

Getting out and seeing the surrounding landscape doesn't get much better when your options include stimulating activities like rock climbing and mountain climbing.

If the kids need a break from sightseeing, why not treat them to a relaxed day of bird watching or wildlife watching?

Leave the planning to someone else as you rub shoulders with fellow travellers on guided nature walks, wildlife spotting tours and city walking tours.

Are you keen on watersports? Add a splash of excitement to your holiday with some rafting or canoeing.

Check out what's going on at the region's nature museums and craft workshops. There are a few to select from, so it pays to do your research!

Pull on your walking shoes and make your way over to one of the surrounding area's lovely outdoor attractions. Its open-air markets are there to be explored.

If you're interested in history, you're sure to get a kick out of the region's fortresses. Do a little research before you go or enlist the services of the closest tour guide.

Learn about the area's beliefs and maybe get in touch with your spirituality by paying a visit to one or two of Sematan's temples.

'There is no love sincerer than the love of food,' George Bernard Shaw once wrote, but throw travel into the mix and it's a marriage made in heaven. You're invited to unite your two loves by eating and drinking your way across Sarawak.

When Sematan locals talk to you about their favourite foods, you could hear laksa (noodle soup) or ikan terubok masin (salted fish) mentioned once or twice. These signature dishes are an important part of the region and should be on any foodie's list.

Travelling goes beyond just ticking off attractions and sampling the local cuisine. It's also about the interactions with the people and their culture. Make the most of your Sarawak getaway by learning a couple of local phrases. 'Sudah lama tidak berjumpa' means 'long time no see'. One more common phrase is 'Selamat malam' ('good night').

There's bound to be a party atmosphere in the air around the 31st of August. The locals will be making preparations for Independence Day, a day of national celebrations.

"Sampai nanti" doesn't need to be so final. Why not keep a few Malaysian ringgits for your next holiday?

If you're flying back home, it's a wise idea to decide a route to the terminal before leaving. From the middle of Sematan, it's around 70 kilometres southeast to Kuching International Airport (KCH), the closest airport.
