Holidays in Telipok

Keen to get away from it all? Can't help scrolling through hashtags like #BeautifulLandscape? Then base yourself in Telipok and take a trip through the seriously beautiful rural landscapes of Sabah.

From Telipok, venture approximately 190 kilometres southwest and you'll arrive in the popular city of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Venture over to Kampong Gaya, 19 kilometres away, and take a look at the Sabah State Mosque. Other worthy sights here include 1 Borneo Hypermall.

How about a little time out with Mother Nature? Pull out your car keys and head in the direction of Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, 20 kilometres away from Telipok. Alternatively, take a breath of fresh air at the Kota Kinabalu Wetlands Centre, 18 kilometres away.

Join the passionate fans encouraging the Sabah FA at their home of Likas Stadium, 17 kilometres away in Kota Kinabalu. You can blend in with the locals by getting into the club's colours, red and white.

Upside Down House and the Tuaran Crocodile Farm are close to the middle of Tuaran, 10 kilometres to the north. After more? Pulau Manukan, 25 kilometres to the southwest of Telipok, is known for All Saint's Cathedral and Sutera Harbour.

Mountain biking and mountain climbing are very popular with the locals. These outdoor pastimes will let you experience this exciting region from a completely different viewpoint.

Can't make up your mind? Sometimes the best way to experience a place is to sign up for a tour. The region offers excellent guided nature walks and wildlife spotting tours.

Whether you're diving into it, drifting on it or bouncing along its surface, not much beats spending an afternoon by the water. You can try out various watersports here, such as swimming and snorkeling.

Spend an afternoon indoors looking at the hidden gems of the region's nature museums.

On a clear, fine day head outdoors to take in the surrounding area's open-air markets.

Eating is one of life's biggest pleasures, and since you're reading this, we guess you think travel is too. Combine your fondness for both by getting out and trying the local cuisine at some of the cafés, bars and restaurants in town.

When Telipok residents talk to you about their food, you could hear pinasakan sada (braised fish with fruit) or hinava (seasoned raw mackerel) mentioned a few times. These signature meals form part of the area's identity and should be on any foodie's list.

Your experience in the Sabah region is certain to be more satisfying if you put in a little effort to learn a couple of the local expressions and greetings. Try to get your lips around 'Asal dari mana?'. It translates to 'where are you from?'. There's also 'Nama saya ...' ('I am from..').

Plan to be here around the 31st of August? What good luck. On this date every year, the whole country comes together for Independence Day.

With just a handful of your travel allowance left in your wallet and some awesome memories that will last forever, say one last "Sampai nanti" to Telipok.

When it's time to fly back home, give yourself plenty of time to reach Brunei International Airport (BWN). Sitting 190 kilometres to the southwest from the middle of Telipok, this is the nearest terminal.
